The Fic of a Snick

Summary: It's hard to really despise a man who once let you be Xena for a night.

A/N: written for verity for shipswap. I was simultaneously delighted and appalled to be assigned Verity in the rare ship exchange. On one hand, I know her likes and dislikes pretty well, and I was thrilled to be writing her a ship we both love with a weird, shifty-eyed love but that I'd never written at length before. OTOH, I had no idea how I was going to keep my assignment secret for two and a half months. Then I ended up visiting her the weekend before the fics were due, so I couldn't even work on it while I was there, because she might ask.

And then she totally didn't ask. At all. Ever. Crisis averted!

Anyway, this is not quite the Dawn/Ethan epic I was hoping to write - and these two crafty, mildly amoral souls deserve epics - but it does go a little way to suggest what I love about their potential dynamic.

( Dawn remembers it like this: Buffy came home with a beautiful dress for Halloween, prettier than anything Dawn had ever even seen, much less worn. )

Somehow, I received two fics for shipswap. I'm not sure how I lucked into such bounty.

The first is Life Continuing, an Ats Wes/Illyria fic in which things go differently midway through Not Fade Away, with long-last consequences. Really creative plot element introduced there, and also some careful balancing of the God-King/human imbalance, which, we know how I love to see equality achieved in unequal relationships.

Secondly, On the Edge of the Fight, which is SPN fic, Dean/Ellen with bonus implications of Sam/Jo, in which Ellen offers Dean some comfort and he just keeps coming back around. The Ellen-voice here is delicious, and ending will break your heart and heal it back up again, just a little. (I'm going to risk looking silly by calling brutti_ma_buoni for this one. Ellen's got an earthy quality to her diction that reminds of nothing so much as that Pamela-and-Missouri fic Brutti wrote a few months back.)

They are both lovely examples of their kind. Go read and tell the anonymous authors how excellent they are!

Also, I have a fic in there somewhere. No prizes, but if you see one that looks like mine, I'd be curious to know. :)

Usually with these Dear Author things I am wordy to a fault. This time, though, I just want to say this: I love or am at least intrigued by all these ships, and I would like to see what you would do with them. I have a few general squicks and do-not-wants below, but beyond that my request is this: be true to the story. Write whatever dang story you want to write with whichever of my pairings you choose. Also feel free to include any other characters you like in the background, as family/friends/support/whatever.

Squicks: non-con, dub-con, underage. Also I have a severe squick about power imbalances in relationships; if there are pairings here that would seem to have them (eg Dawn/Ethan), it's because I'm fascinated by the idea of seeing that imbalance leveled.

Do not want: PWP or explicit sex in general. I have no problem with characters in my ships having sex, I just don't need all the details. Teasing hints go a long way with me.

I've copied down my requests below because I'm obsessive like that, but otherwise that's all I've got to tell you. Have fun!

2. Over at shipswap (which mod team I have joined! hurrah!) we're looking for online resources for nominated canons. We're especially interested in resources for minor canons, but anything you can point us to - wikis, script databases, legal sources of canon, etc - would be appreciated.

1. First, wearing my het mpreg ficathon mod hat, I must point out that lusciousxander has just begun posting her multi-part pregnant Xander fic, an S3-era fic that appears to be a Scooby friendship fic in the classic mode.

2. Meanwhile, shipswap, a rare ship fic exchange, has begun accepting nominations. As of now, there are no Jossverse nominations, although I intend to rectify that this afternoon. Also, please note that per the rules, all SPN het ships qualify except Jo/Dean.

3. Instarec: amnesia, by desertport, which is a romantic Dean/Lisa poem post-6.21. Given the events of 6.21, I tend to side-eye the romantic aspect, but as a poem this piece is absolutely gorgeous. The central image is striking, wonderfully specific to Lisa, and a really neat bit of possible worldbuilding all in one. Just beautiful. Go read.
