Title: worn for sleeping
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing/Characters: Jess, Sam
Words/Rating: 1300 words / PG rating
Spoilers: through 5.21
Summary: It takes three tubes of paint – three shades carelessly selected, though when she finishes Jess sees each one is progressively more red – to write Sam’s name on the wall.

A/N: And here is my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen fic, written for TammyRenH! One of her prompts involved Jess, and I knew immediately it was the one I had to write, but the most important conceit to this fic didn't occur to me until later.

I worried a little that it might be too shippy for Summergen, but no one complained, so I guess I was sufficiently low key about the ship. And the meta aspect wasn't planned at all and snuck in completely on its own.

I maaay write some author commentary on it. First I have to go answer the lovely comments, though. :D

the unlit room - Endverse AU: Kevin, Jo, and Cas raid an abandoned hospital for supplies, and find something they don’t expect.

Someone wrote me Kevin and Jo and Castiel in the Endverse. :D Endverse makes everything better, say I. This is very moody and full of atmosphere as they search the abandoned hospital. It's from Kevin's POV, and he spends the occasional moment wondering what the deal is with this Cas guy, anyway.

So it's good, and it's mine, and you should read it.

I find myself much more invested in this exchange this year than I would have expected, so I am here again, reminding you to sign up. Remember, this year you don't have to offer Sam or Dean if you don't want to!

Hello, Summergen Author! I am so excited that this fest is still going strong, and I am thrilled that you're going to write something for me. I've got some likes and dislikes below, as well as some expansion on one of the prompts, but I am really most interested in the story you want to write. So, feel free to take any of my prompts and run with it in any direction your heart desires.

SUMMERGEN

YAY, [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen! It's back! The comm was so quiet this year that I assumed it was done for, but no! It's a truly venerable SPN fandom tradition and one I'm very glad to see return. I (should) know better than to sign up myself, because this is one fest that always seems to make me hate words by the time I finish my assignment for it, but I really look forward to reading everyone else's! I read almost every fic last year and really enjoyed the experience.

You guys! I read very nearly all the [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen fics! I gave myself permission to skip the crossovers, and also I skipped one that just looked too dark and one that seemed to be All About Crowley, which I just could not deal with. But otherwise: ALL DONE. I am so proud! And I enjoyed the experience a lot, overall (although I definitely fell off commenting in the second half, oops). I love reading works posted anon; there's something so delightful about finding something you love that you might never have tried otherwise, and then maybe even getting a new friend out of it.

I do wish the fest produced a wider mix of characters; there is just so much Sam and Dean relative to the other characters. There wasn't even hardly any Dean+Castiel or Sam+Castiel, and no Kevin fic at all. There were enough ladies, either (although I suppose you all know there would never have been enough ladies to suit me. :)) I suspect this imbalance is partly because a person can't opt out of writing Sam and Dean, so in a lot of cases, that might be all you match on. Oh, well.

Anyway. I have one last batch of recs for you all!

Lethe by [livejournal.com profile] claudiapriscus
Dean is lost in a forest, and his kid brother is tagging along. It's a pretty weird forest, though. I won't say more, because you probably want to read this one unspoiled. It's a neat mystery-type fic, though, with lots of atmosphere.

The Oak and the Dragon by [livejournal.com profile] zubeneschamali
AWWWW. Sam finds a soul glass in the bunker. This should have been so sappy, and yet somehow it... wasn't? Or it was so gentle and peaceful and lovely that I didn't care. I love the imagery and the mood of this.

Mistakes We'll Make Again by [livejournal.com profile] allhailaugustus
A teenchester fic in Sam's senior year of high school. This involves a case of sorts, but the real tension is between Sam, who's started to hide things like SAT studying, and Dean, who knows something's off but doesn't know what. This fic is a like a summer storm just waiting to roll in. The ending resolves nothing at all, in the most satisfying way.

Good For What Ails You by [livejournal.com profile] tifaching
This is a feel-good fic about that time in high school when Dean learned how to cook. By the time you're done, I promise you'll be hungry. It's lovely to see Dean get some affirmation, and I love the bunker framing story, too.

Headliners by [livejournal.com profile] kalliel
This is... this is a weird fic. (I hope kalliel knows I mean that in the best way. <3) It posits one simple change from canon, but the result is takes French Mistake elements and "My Heart Will Go On" verse elements and Eve storyline elements and throws them into a blender. And the result is Jo Harvelle's stepson's meditation on Jo's meditation on Dean Winchester, recently found dead (except Jo knows it's not him). It's a challenging read, I would say, where the effects are almost more important than the events that cause them. Also very grim. If all this sounds appealing, then you will love this fic, I promise you.

Title: Where Owls Dwell
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Sam, Dean
Words / Rating: 2400 / PG-13
Warnings: horror, implied gore
Spoilers: through 8.14
Summary: Everyone dreams about flying, right?

A/N: here it is at last, my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen story for [livejournal.com profile] amber1960. I angsted over this until the very last possible moment; I think I finished editing it like 20 minutes before the deadline. It is not really my usual fare, and I think I am still too close to it to tell whether I like it. Perhaps I'll come back next year and be impressed.

Also available at AO3 here.

( You’d think Sam would know better than to touch anything in the batcave whose provenance he was in any way unclear on. )

Muscle Memory - Dean, Sam, 4.3k, spoilers for 8.01
Dean is slowly trying to drag his consciousness out of purgatory and into the land of the living where it belongs. It's not going especially well. This is a low-key horror piece where most of the horror comes from Dean's disconnect with his present surroundings, his inability to trust his senses or understand the information they're bringing him or tell Sam about it. Very, very nicely done.

Oh Comely - Jo, Dean, 6.4k, set in an AU S4
It is JO CASEFIC. It is Jo casefic where Dean's asked for her help on a case for reasons that aren't entirely clear to her, and there's all this weird Sam+Dean tension simmering under the surface, and the monster is pretty cool, and still all the time Jo is trying to move on from what happened to the Roadhouse at the end of S2. All that and there's another nifty AU element that turns up at the end like an extra birthday present, just because. :DDDD

Thanks to my Kindle, I have been making progress on summergen again and enjoying myself hugely. And look, I bring you recs!

Legacy - 8k, S8 spoilers
In the bunker, Dean falls through a time trap and has to explain himself to the Men of Letters. So S8 gave us time with the boys' grandfather; this fic introduces us and them to their grandmother, Geraldine. I've rarely seen a fic that develops a minor character (an OC, really) as richly as Geraldine is here; she's competent, fiercely determined women with her own motivations, who makes her own choices and suffers her own losses. This fic is from Dean's POV, but never is there any question of Geraldine being a secondary character in it.

But it isn't just about her, either; in a sort 8k the story develops a relationship with her and the boys that just makes my heart ache, because it's so much the kind of family that they've never really had since Mary died. And yet this isn't sugary sweet; these are all people who've made hard choices and had to live with them.

It's just wonderful, every line.

In the Presence of Another World - 7k, post-S8
I don't even know where to start with this one. Sam and Dean are living with a bunch of monsters in the Maghreb, and Sam has a garden and might be a little crazy. Yes. This is Sam and Dean in a setting totally alien to them for reasons that don't become clear until the middle of the fic, and all they can do is try to survive and not kill each other. This is such a richly imagined setting, and the tenuous relationship between the brothers is so delicately told, and meanwhile there are worldwide machinations that we only see glimpses of, because we're stuck here, in the Maghreb.

If you think you know what genfic is like, this isn't it. This is a writer taking the bones of SPN and making it into something new and grotesque and wonderful. And yet it isn't all setting; there's a story here, too, with a beginning and an end.

1. Recently I have picked and helped can green beans and also cut up lots of peaches. It's one of the things I enjoy when visiting home at this time of year. I like food processing in moderation, and I get just about enough before I have to leave again.

2. I've had fics nominated through a couple of different awards thingies recently - specifically the Sunnydale Memorial Awards and [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards. Both are Buffyverse-based awards, although the latter allows for a number of other fandoms as well. As far as I can tell, awards were never a thing in SPN fandom proper, were they? I've never seen them, anyway. Meanwhile, bangs never caught on in Buffy fandom. Interesting how each fandom ends up organizing itself.

Anyway, getting nominated is always pleasant. I'm a bit bemused by the concept of "winning" one of these, since it comes down to either judge preferences or a popularity contest, but I do like that nominations function as a kind of reccing system - writers and artists get a little more exposure, readers get new things to read and look at. Everybody wins. :D

(And while most of the noms are for Tea Parties, which apparently is my winner for the year, Respite also got nominated, which pleases me very much. I think my little Dean/Ellen fic that could never did quite find its audience.)

3. Apparently all Ultimates titles are getting cancelled in November and getting replaced with... mini-series? It is not clear to me. Oh, well, I guess that saves me worrying about looking into that end of the Marvel multiverse anytime soon.

Also Captain Marvel isn't listed in the November solicits, which wouldn't necessarily be worrying, because sometimes this is because a book is running behind (see: Hawkeye), but OTOH sometimes it means the title is canceled without notice (see: Journey into Mystery). And I haven't even gotten to Captain Marvel yet! It can't be canceled! Also it's the only remaining female solo title.

EDIT: CM author Kelly Sue Deconnick seems confident that the book is not canceled. So yay for that.

4. I got my [livejournal.com profile] rarecharacters assignment. It's going to be a new canon, which is always a bit daunting, but it's only 1k, right? Right. /firm

5. I continue to make progress on Summergen. I'm barely a month behind now! I wonder when fics will finish posting and reveals will happen. I'd like to get as far as I can by then - it's always more fun reading and commenting anon, IMO. Exchanges with anon periods are my absolute favorite.

6. I think I shall try to post every day in October. Similar efforts by several people on my flist have inspired me. August and September were never going to work, though - too much travel.

Tin Lung Echoes is chewy delicious Dean+soulless!Sam fic for meeee. The premise is that soulless Sam, for reasons known only to him, has started a one-man prank war. Dean is not amused. This is just the kind of soulless!Sam fic I am always wanting. SO GOOD. GO READ.

I have a goal this summer to read or at least try all the summergen fics. Hence, occasional recs! (Anon, because authors aren't revealed until the end.)

I See My Light Come Shining (From the West to the East) - post-S8, 9.4k words
Wingfic! Somehow this has become a favorite trope of mine; I think it ties into my interest in body horror/general weirdness. "My body is doing what?" Anyway, post-S8, Sam starts growing wings in a very well-reasoned, plot-relevant way. (Hint: Lucifer.) These is a creepy, low-key story with a really striking finish. Kevin is great in it, too - so cranky and surly.

Would You Walk to the Edge of the Ocean - S2, two parts
It's like... temporary curtainfic? After Folsom River Blues, the boys' friend Deacon sends them to a beach cabin to lay low for a while. You guys, I loved this SO MUCH. This is a fic with no easy answers, no easily defined emotional beginnings or endings, just moments that roll together into something bigger, maybe.

Sam and Dean's dynamic is wonderful: caring about each other, but still talking past each other. And though they don't get each other a lot of the time, they're not picking at each other, either. Sam's studied calm, impervious to Dean's questions and apparently weird hang-ups, is a thing of beauty.

The author uses the setting to great effect, too: there's this sense of time slowing down, of plenty of space and quiet, letting the boys think through and talk around things they haven't been able to for a long time.

This is one of my favorite fics that I've read this year, I think, definitely one of my favorite Sam-and-Dean centric. It helps me remind what I loved about those early seasons. I can't recommend it enough. GO READ.

I am so excited that you are writing a story for me! I tried to keep my prompts brief to leave you plenty of room to work, but I'm not sure I managed it. I completely fail at writing concise, one-line prompts. I'm sorry! However, please feel free to take them in whatever direction they inspire you to go! I'd rather have the story that you're inspired to write than one that follows the letter of the prompt.

That said, here are some more info about my general tastes, in case you find that sort of thing useful. (If not, PLEASE IGNORE. I will love what you write. I promise.)

[livejournal.com profile] shipswap is running another rarepair fic exchange, with nominations now open.

[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen is running again this year, with nominations open soon.

[community profile] megexchange is a fic exchange for fic about one Meg Masters, demon. Sign-ups are open here.

I haven't decided which of these I'm going to sign up for, if any. The Meg-centric fest sounds like a great excuse to hone my Meg skills; I wrote that one Meg+Ruby ficlet a while back, and she was a lot of fun to write. And I already nominated a bunch of ships for Ship Swap, so they're there for me to request if I end up participating.

Really, the only exchanges I'm committing myself to this year are [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling, because I had a blast last year, and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas, because I wanted to last year and didn't. Next in priority after those would be [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen, but we will have to see. I did relatively a lot of exchanges last year and kind of wore myself out.

I'm also already signed up for [livejournal.com profile] genteensybang (w00t! writer sign-ups close Thursday!) and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang, and I'd like to do [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang again, because that was really cool last year.

Usually I'm of the opinion that the work should speak for itself and anything I might say can only take away from it, but I ended up having quite a lot of thoughts as I was writing The Only Cure For Grief for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen. And here they are, although they aren't so much commentary as just a lot of ramblings.

Title: The Only Cure for Grief
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Jimmy Novak, Dean, Sam
Rating / Word Count: PG-13 / 5500 words
Warnings: Character deaths major, minor, and implied (but all prior to the beginning of the fic)
Summary: The apocalypse is over, and Jimmy Novak has cobbled together a life now, kind of. The last thing he needs is for Winchesters to come walking back into it. Yet here they are, Sam recovering from demon blood and Dean only recently angel-free, looking for refuge and other things Jimmy doesn’t know how to give.

A/N: This is my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen fic, written for [livejournal.com profile] sistabro to the prompt Dean said yes. Sam didn't. I... took a fair bit of liberty with that. Originally posted here.

Jimmy’s given up on *normal*, on *safe*, and still the shock when Winchesters turn up on his doorstep again is like a blow to the chest. )

I'm reading [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen in a pretty hit-or-miss fashion, but I happened to read a fic posted just this morning that I must rec to you RIGHT NOW: a Sam-and-Dean fic titled Here There Be Tygers. As its genres it lists "hurt/comfort (anterograde amnesia), curtain!fic, horror," and under warnings it says "Questionable care-taking ethics." These choices of genre and phrasing are significant.

And that's all I'm going to say, because I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise, but: it is really something. Go read. Shoo.
