Would-be GIP + S2 Xander-thoughts
Dec. 3rd, 2009 07:55 pmI have the perfect new default icon! 'Tis fabulous! 'Tis not the one of Buffy you see here. I deleted my old Dru icon before I realized that LJ is broken and not letting me upload the new icon, so now I've no Dru icons at all, ohnoes! Fabulous new icon forthcoming, I hope.
In other things, me and the housemate are through "The Dark Ages" in the rewatch. More later when I have time, but right now I have two Xander-centric observations:
* The writers were pushing the Xander/Cordy tension from the very beginning of S2. There's Willow's "Get the hell out of my library!" speech, but it starts even earlier than that. Almost every ep there's X/C sniping.
* I'd forgotten just how hard they pushed Xander's Buffy-crush. Yeep. Every time she so much as looks at a guy, from pretty much "Welcome to the Hellmouth" onward, it's all snark and spite from the Xander corner. Aimed at Angel, sure, but also at Owen, Billy Ford, random person she might hypothetically met over the summer... there is no subtlety there.

Gah, watching "What's My Line" I was reminded again how much they wrote Xander as being all hormones. How does he get together with Cordy? "Tawdry teen lust." What about Anya? "Interlocking parts."
And just the constant visual, verbal comments:
"A porn collection so prodigious it scared even me."
A t-shirt that says "Porn Star"
"Sometimes when I think about two girls doing a spell, I do a spell by myself."
Him taking in the long, long (off-screen) Willow/Tara kiss in Restless.
"And maybe catch an orgy?" "If it's on early."
And on and on and on. Bleah. Why is it the girls get partnered via things like humor (Willow/Oz), shared interests (Willow/Tara), and enjoyment of one another's company (Buffy/Riley), and with Xander it's all about the sex drive? Gah! Is it any wonder his relationships keep ending up in shambles?
(And this despite the fact that I like Xander/Cordy, eventually.)
(So, that might have been a slightly longer rant than you were aiming for... *g*)

Date: 2009-12-05 04:29 pm (UTC)It was okay when it was once--with Cordy--but the fact that it kept happening and all those little things you mentioned in this post? Not cool.

Date: 2009-12-05 04:28 pm (UTC)I loved Xander/Cordy and was highly annoyed by Xander's Buffy-crush, probably because I thought Cordy deserved a guy's entire attention. I'm a huge Cordy fan. Plus, he immediately developed a crush on her as soon as he saw her, so it started as a looks thing. I know he got to know her pretty well pretty soon, but I could never get over the fact that it started entirely because "Ooh! New girl! Blonde! Pretty! Crush!" You know?

Date: 2009-12-05 04:41 pm (UTC)Yep. Not that attraction is rational, but the way Xander clings to that crush through firm rejection and years of him and Buffy both being in other relationships is irrational and in no way attractive.
