first lines, last lines
May. 13th, 2014 02:54 pmThis meme is going around again, and it's been almost exactly a year and 21 fics since I did it last, so hey.
1. On a heavy May evening that smells like wet concrete, Claire Novak falls to her knees. - Ain't No Mountain
2. Jared doesn’t notice at first that he has a brownie. - All Clean
3. Natasha’s old apartment seemed to have dead spots in it, memories lurking at their edges and just out of sight, and the feeling itched like a sniper rifle aimed between her shoulder blades. - Safe House
4. The thing about a diesel is it’ll run on practically anything, at least for a while. - Open Road
5. One moment Mary and Lavinia are walking quite respectably through the garden, elbow to elbow, and the next Lavinia is giggling so hard over some uncharitable remark of Mary’s that she can barely keep her feet. - what lies beneath
6. “You don’t have to do this,” Dawn says again. - Down Memory Lane
7. Six months after Jo opens the place, a demon shows up at her door. - Jo's Last Chance Coffee Shop
8. When Alana gets back with dinner, the windows of the closed-up house are dark. - Better in Blue
9. When the Will found it crouched under an end table, he took it for some deformed kind of hound: blue, hairless, all wrinkles, with pointy ears that doubled the size of its head. - Not a Hound
10. It’s not until New Year’s Day, at the supper table, that Scott leans around Artie to say to Darla, “I’m glad you came back. It wouldn’t be the same without you.” - Pitching the Woo
11. When Sophie woke up, she was covered in blankets. - Lying to a Lying Cat
12. For all that tracking down Ellen Harvelle was Sam’s idea in the first place, by the time he walks in the door to Harvelle’s Roadhouse he’s decided to let Dean deal with her. - In Time of Need
13. The Death of Rats did not lack for things to do. - Death (of Rats) Takes a Holiday
14. Outside the café windows, snow’s coming down in huge heavy flakes that melt when they hit the ground. - Not Just for Hallmark Specials Anymore
15. Crowley doesn’t kill her, the bastard. - Best Thing Going
16. You’d think Sam would know better than to touch anything in the batcave whose provenance he was in any way unclear on. Where Owls Dwell
17. The line at the Grease is horrendously long, full of anxious freshmen and proud parents, and once Gen finally gets to the counter there’s a fraught moment when the kid behind it thinks they might be out of ice cream sandwiches. - Chemical Bonding
18. Time doesn’t pass in this place. - you were meant for me (perhaps as punishment)
19. "I need my tube," Jensen says as he walks in the door. - Double Pointed
20. The air began to nip, the larches turned golden, and the bear clan of Pad prepared for its last open-air feast of the year. - Goodnight Bears
21. Drusilla didn't know everything that happened when the black boys full of metal rode into town on their motorcycles. - Tea Parties
In short: clearly I think the question of when is the single most important question to answer. Also who.
I started listing the last lines, too, but it was too depressing. I need to pay more attention to how other people end their stories, because mine end with dialogue very nearly always, and more variety seems desirable.
