I watched it, finally. So many good people! FRAN KANZ. :DDD

This rec is a wee bit spoilery, so, spoiler cut.

By far my favorite part of the movie was the monsters, down in the installation. At the beginning, during the betting pool, I paused just so I could read off all the names, and I was deeply disappointed that we got zombies. Bo-ring.

But then! Then we got to see ALL THE MONSTERS. EVEN THE MERMAN. It was perfect. (I really want to know how those people with the white masks were killing.) Actually, to be really honest, the only reason I watched this at all was because I saw a photoset of the monsters on Tumblr.

All of which leads to me reccing Monsters, Inc, by Margo_Kim, a 2012 Yuletide fic that's a series of pre-canon vignettes involving the monsters and their keepers. It integrates a bunch of the monsters mentioned in the film (the angry molesting tree!) and generally hilarious. I rec it highly.

Ooh, I'll have to look up that fic later.

THIS MOVIE. I love it so much. The characters (Marty!!) and actors (Chis Hemsworth! Fran Kranz! Bradley Whitford! Sigourney freaking Weaver!) and creativity and the cleverness of it all!

The actors were a delight. So many people I knew! (Question: why does Joss always put Amy Acker in labcoats? What's the deal?)

Marty reminded me of my brother in law, and I completely adored him. I was so glad he hung around...

So glad you took the time to rec this, I never would have stumbled across it on my own. Thanks!

Most welcome! When I finished the fic, I went looking to see if there was anything, and lo! Yuletide provided. :)

(I really want to know how those people with the white masks were killing.)

I think (but I could be wrong) that there's a brief glimpse of them pouring gasoline on someone and one of them holding a match, and then the camera cuts away to the next bit of mayhem.

I read that fic when it was posted at Yuletide, and loooooved it. Angry Consensual Touching Tree, heee.

Having now rewatched, yes, that is what the mask people were doing. I wonder if they were a reference to something?

Oh what an absolutely fantastic fic. I love it, thanks for the rec! It really strikes that cracky/creepy balance that I adore, like the SCP stories.

You are most welcome! I love that creepy/cracky balance, too.

I've just been fooling around a little bit on SCP, but it's kind of... huge. Any recommendations for how to go about browsing? Any favorites?

Have you gone through most of the good ones that came up on meme, like the Ronald Reagan tape and the thing in the staircase? Those are my favourites, though they are definitely more creepy than cracky. (Warning: unsettling images!)

I usually start with the Top Rated Pages on the sidebar, and then click through to interesting SCPs that come up in the logs. The site is indeed alarmingly huge and it's easy to get lost in all the links, like Wikipedia but less educational.

Oooh, I just read both of those you linked, and they were great. Especially the second one. Creepy like really good horror, but without either the gore or the, um, triumph over/demystifying of the source of the horror that seems to happen in a lot of movies. I don't actually watch many horror movies, but when I do, it's the creep factor I like, not the gore or the jump moments or the suspense. So, like, the staircase one is perfect.

I shall try browsing through the Top Rated ones. That sounds like a delicious activity for a cool winter afternoon. Thank you for the links and suggestions!
