meme of Yuletides past
Dec. 18th, 2012 10:27 pmA meme is going around in which one talks about one's past Yuletide fics. I haven't done Yuletide the last couple of years because I realized I find learning to write new canons under pressure stressful, especially as a gift for another person. I miss the fun of the Yuletide archive opening, though.
Anyway, here are my fics written for Yuletides past. Perhaps I will do another one on gifts I've received, since I've received some lovely ones and would like to think people are still reading them.
2008
Not Monster Nor Stranger - The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman – Silas gen
My first Yuletide fic and one of my first posted fics, period. Here begins my tradition of writing quirky and all-knowing female OCs, and also my tradition of stealth crossovers in my Yuletide fics; in this case, the backstory of the OC bears a striking resemblance to Philomela, from Greek myth.
I still am not quite sure how I feel about this fic. I was petrified of writing in Gaiman-voice and finally decided not to bother trying, but I managed a few turns of phrase I still like anyway. As a whole, though, I feel that it does not tie in with the novel or with Silas's characterization as well as I could wish. Ah, well.
Wireless - The Matrix - Trinity gen
A 100-word drabble about Trinity's arrival in Zion, from back when I still wrote drabbles. Looking back, I still think I did a pretty decent job at what it was I wanted to do.
What Became of Marie La Fleur - Beauty and the Beast (1992) – Belle+triplet friendship
A drabble series in which the green triplet carves out her own identity and becomes friends with Belle despite herself. The language is not always so rich nor so efficient as it might be, but to this day, this is probably my favorite of my Yuletide fics for the sheer joy of the unexpected friendship and of playing in this canon I love so very dearly.
2009
Three Christmases with Miss Honey - Matilda, by Roald Dahl – Matilda+Miss Honey friendship
This is a sequence of post-canon vignettes about Matilda and Miss Honey and holidays and magic. And also it's a stealth Harry Potter crossover. (Stealth because I've still never read the books.) I was never quite happy with this fic; it's pleasant, but it always felt insubstantial to me, weightless. My recipient liked it well enough, though, as did lots of other people, so I'm not complaining.
Lift - Matilda/Firefly - River Tam + Matilda friendship
This wasn't quite a Yuletide fic, because it's mostly a Firefly fic with occasional Matilda cameos, but I'm including it here anyway, because I wrote it for the same recipient as Three Christmases with Miss Honey. It was inspired by a comment she made in her journal about River and Matilda having things in common. Of course I then had to figure out how to make it so. I'm moderately happy with it. River is always a kick to write.
2010
A Little Shadow That Goes In and Out with Me - Raines -
Raines was a quirky little procedural that only lasted six episodes, in which Jeff Goldblum is a homocide detective who hallucinates his victims. The structural set-up had a ton of possibilities which had only just begun to be realized when the show was canceled. Also, Jeff Goldblum! (Last I checked the entire series was still up on Hulu, FYI.)
The fic I wrote for it is by far the most ambitious of my Yuletide fics; not only is it the longest, but I ended up writing it in second person from the POV of one of the detectives hallucinations. As one does. I managed to get across a lot of the peculiarities of the show, I think while also capturing Goldblum's character's voice okay. Plus, it was my first-ever casefic, even though most of the actual investigation takes place off-screen.
(Factoid: I was assigned The Graveyard Book before I had the chance to read it, and Raines before I'd seen more than one episode. Yuletide served as a nice excuse to take in some stories I really meant to anyway.)

Date: 2012-12-19 11:12 am (UTC)I always think I've done Yuletide for so long, but when I actually look at it last year was my first full year. Before that I'd treated, written pinch hits and New Years Resolutions since 2007 but never got round to actually signing up.
Hey there's still the fun of reading when the archive opens!

Date: 2012-12-19 05:12 pm (UTC)Even though I haven't signed up for several years, I would really love to write some treat this year. Maybe. We'll see. I still have a few days, and I have a couple of Dear Yuletide letters in mind to write for!

I'm really bad on settling on one thing, so I thought I'd give you options. If there's any of the tea ones you'd like but you'd rather have a different color of text, I can probably make that happen, just let me know!
