Jan. 29th, 2010 07:39 pmThere I am, rewatching S3 with the housemate. "Band Candy" is great joyous fun, which I hadn't appreciated the first time, and "Lover's Walk" is even better with company than the first four or five times watching it by myself. But still, by "Amends" I'm thinking, "Yanno, I remember really loving this season, but I am bored."
And then we get past "Gingerbread" and, whoa baby, I remember why I loved this season. Because:
"Helpless": A serious Buffy-is-the-Slayer episode. Horror, right down to the helpless blonde, only so not. And the Giles&Buffy angst! Woe!
"The Zeppo": The Xander ep of the series. So, funny. Funny. (Didja know all writer Dan Vebber ever wrote for the show was this and "Lover's Walk"? That's gotta be highest average quality of any of the writers.) And my gosh you guys, how much do I love the whole bystander's POV approach to Big Bad Apocalypse? HOW MUCH? Plus Jack O'Toole and his boys are such fun.
"Bad Girls"/"Consequences": The Buffy&Faith eps, as far as I'm concerned. Not technically a two-parter, but you pretty much have to watch them that way. Oh, Faith, so close so many times to taking that offered hand, and never quite making it. Plus the pwnage of one Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. And look! Giles is sitting on the library table! With a lollipop! And Buffy finally dealing with what it might be like to kill a human (since we got ripped off in "Ted"). (Question, though: How did Angel get in Faith's hotel room to keep her from strangling Xander? Has she not lived there long enough for it to have dwelling status?)
"Dopplegangland": A Willow episode! Hee! The ep that won me over despite the tired evil twin trope. And "I'd say that's a radical interpretation of the text." And Faith&Mayor, which is always a hoot and yet so horribly sad.
"Enemies": The Angel is Interesting Episode. Seriously, if I were writing Angel, I'd write about this ep, and how much of Angelus he put on versus how much he just let go from within. Really interesting potential view into the dichotomy there. (Also: here we have people pronouncing it AN-gel-us (Wesley and Giles) and an-GEL-us (Angel himself) in the same ep. What? Silly British people.) And I continue to adore every snide Gilesian remark towards Wesley. Also more Faith&Mayor and lots more Faith exploration. Oh, girl, you're in that bad kind of trouble, all right, and it'll only get worse.
So now I remember why I love S3. It's because the second half is MADE of WIN.
