SPN: 4.04 Metamorphosis
May. 4th, 2011 08:17 pmThe MOW story here was gross yet compelling - nice job there, show. I really wanted the guy to win out in the end, and not just for Sam's sake. Alas.
I think I'm already bored with the brotherly conflict here. Dean tells Sam the psychic stuff is a bad idea; Sam tells Dean that trying to use it for good is the only way he can find to deal. Tell, tell, tell. It's like back in Bugs, eons ago, when all the "development" about their relationship with John consisted of them talking about it. To each other. About a man we'd never seen except in flashback.
A little less conversation, a little more action, please.
However, there were some nice moments where they were so clearly talking past each other. Sam tries to explain himself to Dean, and Dean just doesn't know what to say; Dean tries to apologize to Sam, and Sam won't listen; Sam vows to stop the psychic stuff cold-turkey, but says it has nothing to do with Dean. They're not reconnected yet after those four months apart.
I expect we'll learn more about Dean's post-death experiences - surely we're not letting him off with just a few nightmare flashes - but it's Sam's time over the summer I'm really interested in. What all have he and Ruby been up to? Surely it wasn't just actual sex the demon was winkwink, nudgenudging them about.
And do we believe Sam actually means to stop using his powers? No, ladies and gentlemen. No, we do not. Maybe he means it tonight, having just burned alive a guy who fell into his own private pit of darkness, but it won't last. Besides, we've watched him lie through his teeth multiple times since the season started, not just lies of omission but blatant untruths, not just minor things like his present location but major things like whether or not he followed Dean's dying wish. It's that that worries me, a whole lot more than the psychic powers themselves.
All that, even though he was just breaking my heart with this speech:
Oh, SAM. That right there tells us more about where he's at than we usually learn in half a season.
In other things, this Ruby is nothing like our other Ruby. Her mannerisms, her speech patterns - no resemblance. We've seen the yellow-eyed demon played by at least four different actors and he's always come across roughly the same (although this last guy, in In the Beginning, was nothing to write home about), but Ruby could be an entirely different demon. And, hey, maybe she is. Not like we couldn't torture Ruby in hell until we got enough info to impersonate her.
Anyway, I don't like her.
Castiel, next time? *hopeful*

SAM: I've got demon blood in me, Dean! This disease pumping through my veins, and I can't ever rip it out or scrub it clean! I'm a whole new level of freak! And I'm just trying to take this -- this curse... and make something good out of it. Because I have to.

Yeah, this is the danger of having the same character played by multiple actors. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Ha, you are already noting when Castiel is NOT in an episode. :)
