You know what there is not enough of in the world? There is not enough post-series Buffy and Faith as BFFs fic. Sure, they'd have issues to work through and yeah, sometimes they might grate on each other, but those two girls need each other like they need no one else. There's stuff about the biz that all these new teenybopper Slayers just don't get, yanno? And Buffy with a best girlfriend that isn't Willow makes me very happy indeed.

Still, if I've got a post-series story where Buffy and Faith are not in a relationship (ie - most of them) you can pretty much guarantee that, in my head, they're BFFs.

This! I've not got a fic with their friendship as the focus, but it's in the background of a fair few other fics and it just came naturally - I didn't even have to think about it.

(It was also one of the things that really threw me in s8 - WHY was Faith all alone and then *fighting* Buffy? They should be BFFs - anything else is stupid.)

The S8 portrayal seemed plausible to me - I just figured they'd gotten in a fight over something and gone storming off their separate directions. Then again, I wanted to believe it, since I found the Buffy-Faith tension in NFFY to be the most interesting and canon-relevant character work in the entire comic series.

I think it would've been fine if we didn't have to assume there'd been a fight in order for it to make sense. But I still would've preferred them as BFFs than enemies, since they pretty much did that to death in the TV series.

Yes, the Faith in my head swears a blue streak. In fact, I'm pretty sure her swearing vocabulary is significantly broader than mine, which is one of my hang-ups about writing her.

It was custom-made for me! The pose is just so Faith, made all the better by being SMG.

Well, you know just how violently I agree with you. In all of my post-"Chosen" fics, they're BFFs, but I haven't written anything that focuses on them, unfortunately. Faith is hard for me since we have less than zero in common.

Just so we're clear? This post is your fault. There's that one line in, uh, one of your unposted fics that I've read (babyfic, maybe?) about how Buffy stops in Cleveland a few days for such-and-such, "which was really just an excuse to spend time with Faith." And I went, "Yes. This."

Besides, at this point Faith could understand Buffy a whole, whole, whole lot better than Willow could.

So true. Although it's only recently that I've realized just how anti-late!Willow I've become.

Ha! I am thrilled to be blamed for this one! And I think that one's actually in Basiare, which has been posted. And it was probably my favorite toss-offed line. I always try to throw in at least one "Hey! Buffy and Faith are BFFs now!" line in my future fics.

Oh, me, too. When I watch the later seasons, it's basically all Buffy, Spike, Dawn, and Anya for me. And in S7 I stop disliking Xander, finally, though I don't find him overly interesting then. Oh! And Andrew! I forgot about Andrew! I like him, too!

I just don't think I'd be very good at it. She and I have, to quote penny_lane_42, "less than zero in common" and I don't think I could get inside her head with any sort of believability.

I did actually write her once... but it was my S8 crackfic, so it didn't matter if she wasn't totally in character, lol.

I LOVE writing Faith. I love writing the turmoil of Buffy and Faith's relationship in the same way that I love writing Spike and Buffy. One day I'll finish my sequel involving F/B, but while I wait 30 years for THAT to happen (haha), here's a fic rec for you:

"Gemini (http://only-passenger.livejournal.com/96255.html)" by only_passenger Buffy/Faith PG (and boy is it hot for PG!) without any real slashy shipping, but there's just this underlying understanding that is leaping off the screen as you read it. It's nominated at c2c right now for a very good reason! But, the author hasn't accepted it so I'm afraid it might not go through for voting, which is a shame, so I'm recommending the hell out of it.

I have to admit, the femslash angle on Faith and Buffy doesn't interest me, but I shall tiptoe in and see how I feel about Gemini, especially since I really liked the author's gen Faith-and-Buffy piece, Angels in the Architecture. Thanks for the rec!

I was actually thinking about Buffy and Faith and why Buffy/Faith pre-Chosen just doesn't work for me at all. I think it's because Buffy struggles so hard to separate herself from the Slayer identity, and Faith is like a ray of hope that it could happen, that Buffy could make being a Slayer a job and still have a self because she's not the only Slayer anymore. But then Faith keeps screwing up, and I'm sure to Buffy it feels a little like Faith is holding the thing she wants most in her hand and going "oopsies! gonna drop it! gonna drop it! oopsies!" Which explains why Buffy's reactions to Faith are always so intense before the proto-Slayers arrive, and so mild afterward-- now, Faith isn't the only thing between Buffy being subsumed by her Slayer-ness.

Which is all just as valid for Buffy&Faith. It's hard to be friends or lovers with the person who controls the thing most important to you and who doesn't understand why it's so important. Once you take that off the table, of course they're gonna bond, because they are Awesome.

Interesting. I don't think I had thought it all out quite that way. It's clear in S3 that other people in Buffy's life - her mom, Giles - view Faith as a possible substitute so that Buffy can go out and live her life. (This is an awfully one-dimensional view of Faith - it isn't like she won't struggle with the separation of Slaying and self, too. But I'll save the Mistreatment of Faith rant for another day).

But at that point Buffy seems to mostly see the flip side of that, that Faith is taking away Buffy's sense of identity (and also her friends, her mom, and her fries). In the beginning Buffy sees Faith as threatening; later she begins to accept Faith's view that Slaying is self, or so it seems to me. And then Faith screws up, yeah, but she does it by being too much of a Slayer, which makes Buffy back up real fast from any enthusiasm for her calling.

I dunno. I'm not sure I'm seeing the canonical support there.

Once you take that off the table, of course they're gonna bond, because they are Awesome.

It's an undertone of the Rulesverse, but there's only about half a scene where it's addressed at all. I don't know why it's hard to write them together, when in my head they spend lots of time interacting, basically as best friends.

I'd suggest that you have trouble writing it because of the mundanity of their relationship now - except clearly, mundanity is no obstacle to you! *g*
