I'm still not entirely sure that I really know how to go about remixing and what it entails. Like, do you just take the basic premise and rewrite it the way you would have written it?

At any rate, I think I'd be interested in "Lift." Though I don't know how I could improve upon the original: I'm in love with your River-voice.

Heh, I think my first instinct would be to try to remix Seraph by telling the unmonkified version (i.e. no Dawn). But then I kind of don't want to, because the Spike/Dawn relationship is one of my favorite things about the story.

Alternatively, it might be fun to expand Opportunity and Motive into a full-on bodyswap fic.

FWIW, my original drafts of the first three chapters or so were unmonkified - I didn't decide to work with Dawn-reality until I'd written maybe 15k words total. So no Dawn, but a whole lot more Anya. She's the one who goes with Spike to his appointments and watches his meltdown afterwards.

Heh. There was really way too much plot in that bodyswap piece to fit into a drabble, but it was a drabble prompt, and anyway I had very little interest in anything longer. Bodyswap just isn't one of my kinks.

I think bodyswap could be one of my kinks, but I've rarely seen it done well. I'm always looking for something on the level of the Buffy/Faith swap and all the inherent issues there... but most of the time I just get a bodyswap as prelude to bad porn. :(

Yep, a carryover from the old draft. I actually have that whole scene and the first vamp cult scene written with Anya instead of Dawn. There's surprisingly little difference, actually, although of course Anya chatters about different things than Dawn.

Yep. Until "Who Are You?" I thought it was the hokiest trope ever. I really dislike the old Jodie Foster Freaky Friday because of my embarassment squick and I figured all bodyswaps would be like that, and I was quite impressed that Joss managed to do something else with it instead.

I think to do it right you'd need two people with a relationship as complex as Buffy and Faith's, so that the bodyswap was for something. Otherwise, I kind of like the idea of just suddenly, randomly acquiring a different body than one had before - not anyone's in particular, just different. But I've never seen much of that, either.

Of course, angearia has the bodyswap/genderswap ficathon coming up - maybe something decent will come out of it?

Heh, I'd say that Spike and Angel are just as complex as Buffy and Faith, so your drabble was on the right track there, lol.

And yeah, I will be curious to see what comes out of the Who Are You? ficathon.

Do you watch Red Dwarf? Because I'd forgotten there was a bodyswap episode - although, since Rimmer is a hologram, there's not enough bodies to go around, lol, which makes for an unusual complication.

(I thought of you when the mpreg came up. Sadly, it's dealt with in between seasons.)

Actually, I'm kind of fundamentally opposed to magic working on vampires. I just don't think it should. They're corpses animated by demons; they're completely cut off from the usual interplay of natural and supernatural that I think ought to be the foundation of a universe's magic, barring some other explanation.

Anyway, point being: it seems to me that bodyswapping ought to fundamentally not work on Spike and Angel.

Red Dwarf is on the to-watch list - rather far down, though, because the general vibe I'd gotten was "very strange, very British, acquired taste." And yeah, I knew there was mpreg in it, but I didn't realize it was offscreen - now I'll know not to be disappointed when I finally get around to watching the show.

Huh. I can honestly say that had never occurred to me, since we see magic working on vampires multiple times in canon. (In fact, Angel's entire character is based on a spell, lol.) I'd say there canonical evidence for it both ways (Spike is unaffected by the Ben=Glory forgetting spell, for instance), so it depends on the magic, I suppose.

I'm not sure he's completely unaffected but more that the spell is starting to break and he's the most resistant to magic. Not because of what Spike says ("Glory's worked the kind of mojo where anyone who sees her little presto-change-o instantly forgets. And yours truly, being somewhat other than human ... stands immune.") but later on when Glory realizes her spell is breaking because Dawn remembers the change.

GLORY: (whirls to face the minions) See? She's not supposed to remember that! Nobody should! (rubs her chest anxiously) The cloak between Ben and me is fading! I almost helped her!

Spike's immunity is his choice of words, but then later on we have Glory revealing the veracity of the spell is waning. Dawn remembers the change too and she's supposed to be 100% human with Key filling--also the spell works on Dawn in Blood Ties.

Then there's the other possibility that the spell was only directed at human beings for some reason because they are Glory's enemies (the monks, the Knights), but I think the text supports the former implication more. But Glory as the authority on her cloaking spell says "nobody should" remember her changing, so I think it's that Spike wised up faster. It's probably somehow related to how he can smell magic and track Rack's moving quarters. He's more aware of magic and when magic starts to show its seams, he can step through it and back to reality. Which reminds me of Wesley saying, "The first lesson a watcher learns is to separate truth from illusion. Because in the world of magics, it's the hardest thing to do." For Spike, he has more natural ability to separate truth from illusion as a vampire, though he's not fully immune to spells.

As for vampires being immune to magic, I think vampires pretty much exist because of magic. A demon spirit animating a human corpse is reliant on magic and the supernatural. Vampires exist because of blood magic, after all.

That's also possible, but either way it shows a distinction between vampires and humans, so I think it's reasonable precedent that certain magic can work differently (or not at all) on non-humans.

But I agree with you that canon is pretty clear that vampires are not resistant to ALL magic by any means, since their very existence depends on it.
