Anonymeme: Look into My Id

The above title should be read in a suitably faux-German sort of voice.

penny_lane_42 recently wrote an intriguing post on id!fic. Basically, id!fic is fic that may or may not be reasonable, logical, in-character, or in any way good story, but that you eat up with a spoon anyway. So like narrative kink, only more so.

Now, some writers embrace their id and write it all out there, and that can be a fabulous thing. Self-awareness FTW. But often when I'm reading a fic I find myself wanting to tap the author and say, "Pardon me, did you know your id is showing?"

So, a couple of us got to wondering what our fics revealed about us. Hence this anonymeme. Are our ids showing?

Yanno, I got nothing. You definitely have a Spuffy kink a mile wide, but we already knew that. And I'm fairly positive that passionate commitment to canon is not actually a kink.

I can actually comment on this since I've exhaustively consumed the Barbverse - so I think one id fic tendency of yours is your adherence to your own canon - and that personal canon is extensive, with worked out genealogies and timelines filling in events in the lives of about 20-30 major figures (when we include the OC's) for up to and including 60+ years. I think you do like family fic, though not necessarily baby fic, but more fractured domesticity as only a still-soulless Spike could do - and oh, yeah, Redemptionista, thy name is Barb. But the concept of family is big - Buffy and Spike end up having five children, which is far more than the average family, and much of the early Barbverse features Dawn as de facto child in domestic Spuffy setting, even if that setting moved to Pylea on occasion.

Who gives a damn, anyway? Your id is my id, and I'm happy you're there to feed it.

Hmm - all I can really think of is that you seem to like characters being nice to each other, with a sort of semi-domestic cheer (apart from when you subvert that and the semi-domestic cheer is a cover for something much darker). You also seem to get off on prose that isn't prose, where a fic's auxiliary packaging is foregrounded as much as, if not more than, the actual content. I'm sure there's something more exciting to come up with, but I possibly don't know your fic well enough...

Is it part of your "id" to say that you obviously have no problem with open sexuality!! Too obvious? Actually, you really seem to have a bead on what characters would really want deep down instead of what would be acceptable for the public to take. So maybe you are having to live life an acceptable way for everyone else and are letting loose through your fiction? Not that I would know. But when I read your work it's as though you are opening up everything possible and you are totally fine with that.

You are actually one of the least id-driven authors I can think of, at least from what I can tell. What I like best about your fic is that it's intellectually interesting; you start with a concept you want to explore, and go with it. It's a very intellectual approach, I think.

I think your id has a surprising fondness for gooey centres of 'aww', even when hidden behind dark, gothic wrappers. But it also likes banter and snark more than slushy declarations.

I think I've read just about all your Buffyverse fic, and I think you've got a thing for angst and emotional pain. I'm particularly thinking of your French revenge piece (which I can never spell!) and your piece comparing Tara and Spike, but also your kinda schmoopy Ats S5 Spuffy reunion fic and even "Gay Me Now," which after making me laugh until I snorted then went serious and explored Spike's ongoing struggle with soul-induced guilt.

Less iddy, but I think you're also concerned with things not being too easy. "Riddle" is a good example - Spike endures unimaginable torture and saves the day multiple times, and yet the story ends with Buffy disturbed and seriously turned off by his soulless POV. But the prime example is clearly Tekubi. The show gave Spike his hands right back and shied away from any real disability (and also the SFX cost of continued JM handlessness), but you jump in with both feet and explore how Spike and Spuffy would survive his being handicapped. No easy evil-magical surgeries for you! I love that.

I don't know that I'd see these come from your id, but: strong women (especially in the Buffyverse pieces). Also, chewy philosophical concepts. In fact, I'd say that your fics, although deliciously in-character, are actually more idea-driven than character-driver, which is a rare thing in fandom. Lots of people use fic as meta about their canon of choice, but you use fic (especially the Dollhouse pieces) as meta about the world. In fact, I think several of them could be comfortably read and enjoyed by someone entirely outside the fandom. (The Barter Economy, especially, comes to mind here. Classic short horror there.)

The complex, squishy, messy, aching, bloody process of relationships seems to satisfy you the most. And I really respect that.
