So LJ is doing that thing again where it's not emailing me comments. Pthbt. I can't remember; the last time this happened, did the comments get emailed later? Or just not at all?

In other things, this occurred to me related to Friday's Dollhouse eps: when Suit Guy asked Adelle and Topher who was minding things back at the LA dollhouse, I assumed he was talking about Adelle. She's Lady in Charge, after all. It was a bit of whiplash for them to start talking about replacing Topher.

So, how fabulous would it have been if they'd imprinted Sierra with Adelle? Hmmmm?

I'm getting pretty predictable re: this show, aren't I? Although my growing affection for Adelle isn't as obvious, methinks. But I really love the way she's gone all mama bear protecting what she views as hers. She's kind of like Mal and his crew, except less with the warm fuzzies, you know? I just envision her as very ruthless in protecting everyone in the dollhouse who she views as her responsibility. And I'm really loving that.

I'm waiting for the cracks to start showing. What were her "other indiscretions" Suit Guy mentioned a few weeks ago? At what point does her commitment to her dollhouse cause her to make disastrous choices? Why did the events in "Belonging" send her on a drinking binge (relatively speaking) when nothing else had? It's Whedon; you know it's only a matter of time before something comes crashing down on her.

But aside from that, yes, she is so very elegantly ruthless, and her malice, when she has any, is anything but petty. Even without the layers she's just so much fun.

Oh, absolutely. I'd love to know more about her on a personal level, too: especially why she made the choice to work for the dollhouse in the first place. You can easily imagine with Topher; there's no real mystery there. But Adelle? There's so many possibilities.

It occurs to me that it would be oh-so-clever of the writers to set up Adelle as a direct complement with/contrast to Caroline. Caroline went up against Rossum because she's an idealist, but it'd be so easy to believe that Adelle joined the DH specifically out of idealism. She spouts a lot of things about how the DH gives people what they "need," etc (and boy howdy does that make me flash back to Joss wanting to tell the stories people "need"). I've never been sure how much of that was willful self-deception. What if, despite what 'indiscretions' she's committed and how disillusioned she's become, she actually believed all that at one time (and to some extent still does)?

After all, the very first scene of the whole series was of Adelle, convincing Caroline to join the DH. I don't remember the exact conversation, but what a perfect time to set up that contrast! And then there's that question in E1 of whether or not Caroline shot the DH staff - as represented by Adelle, whom Caroline is threatening with a gun.

Of maybe this was already all obvious, and I never noticed?

I think comments have been sort of hit or miss for me. I do get them, just way later sometimes. As far as I know, anyway. No one has complained that I haven't answered their comment.

Generally, or just in the last day or two? Today I seem to be getting comments from everything except my own journal. Grr. Arg.

I'm not sure. I didn't think about it until others started saying they weren't getting comments. I just thought I didn't have any.:) Today I seem to have received a few that might well have been posted a couple of days ago; but I haven't gone back to check all my posts for comments.

Hmph. I bet this has something to do with the same bunch of maintenance that was making userpics all wonky a couple of days ago.

I would guess so. Presumably, someone has reported it by now and LJ knows they have a problem to fix. Or not.

Yes. This. I get comment notification for when I comment on other journals, but not my own. And in the past 24 hours *checks* I've gotten probably 40 or so comments on my journal that I wasn't notified about. I've been clicking and refreshing periodically so that I don't miss replying to someone. It's this thing - I always reply.

That would've been awesome with awesomesauce on top.

Though I suppose Adelle could handle things by phone if necessary, whereas they needed a physical person with Topher's knowledge to run his equipment (even more so than Suit Guy realized, since they were being sneaky and hackery). The Dollhouse would have to shut down temporarily if there was no one to imprint the actives. Is Ivy allowed to do that, or is she too lowly an assistant?

True. And it'd be a little problematic, it seems to me, to have two people with Adelle's authority working independently. But still... *g*

I get the impression that Ivy would be quite capable of imprinting actives, if only they would let her. As it is, though, I'm pretty sure she isn't allowed.

Heh, I can see it now - Ivy starts a mutiny by imprinting actives without permission.

Oh, she so could. It's a good thing our folks are loyal; can you imagine the sheer chaos Topher could cause if he had a mind to?

The only problem with the "Sierra as Adelle" idea is that I would have died of happiness right there on the spot. As it was, our entire household (including neighbors) practically erupted into a riot when Victor!Topher appeared. There was much bowing to the TV at the commercial break.

As for the MIA comments, I never got 'em the last time. I had few entries to comb through then, so it didn't seem so troubling...

It's just as well we didn't see Sierra!Adelle, then. 'Cuz we'd hate to lose you, even to death by happiness. *g*

And yes, the fabulousness of Victor!Topher defies description. It's pretty clear the writers have realized what a gem they have in Enver and are getting as much use out of him as they can. He's played three different other characters in the last six episodes.

And now that I think about it, how about Victor!Adelle?

*chortle*

EDIT: BTW, the comments from you own journal *do* appear in your LJ inbox. But replies to your comments on other journals don't, and I don't think there's any way to check that...

The trouble, it seems to me, being that it'd be hard to convey to gosh-wow of Sierra as Adelle when Sierra is only visual. The Adelle part would come through with every line of dialogue, but the bizarre juxtaposition would have trouble coming through, I'd think.

Which is maybe one reason why Dollhouse fic doesn't seem to be all that common? (Or possibly I'm just not looking in the right places. I confess, I haven't looked very hard. Most of what I've seen seems to be plotless character studies of Topher or Adelle, or explanations I can't buy of Claire's relationship to Topher.)

You know, it'd be problematic, but I bet Lirazel could do it with her Parentheticals of AWESOME. Because she could layer the Sierra and Adelle realities. Maybe even give Sierra some burgeoning awareness underneath her being Adelle.

It's true. I think to get anything like the full effect, you'd have to try some structural funnery like that. Hmm...
