My mindless entertainment this weekend was to upload all my fic (save Seraph) to the shiny new Archive of Our Own (or AO3). I found the process tedious, but I haven't uploaded to an archive before - maybe they're all like that.

Oi vey. It's a very tedious process, but in my experience it's always like that. Good on you for uploading almost everything! I held off on putting up my own long WIP and all my drabbles. The importing and editing was starting to take its toll on me.

I still have thirty-three chapters of NE to strip hard returns out of. :P

*shivers*

Thought it looks like they've fixed the mass importing feature, so hopefully it'll work better. I'm dreading importing TYSK...

Are you including fic from other fandoms you've written for? Or chiefly Buffyverse/Barbverse?

Once I get my Buffyverse stuff straightened out, I might consider going over my EQ stuff. However, there's potential problems with that: I was writing in a shared universe with a lot of other people's original characters, and I've lost touch with many of those people. It's entirely possible that some of them wouldn't want stories featuring their characters posted for one reason or another.

Plus I'm not sure how comprehensible a lot of the stories would be to an audience who isn't very familiar with the history of the shared world we were working in. I went back and re-read one of them not that long ago, and much of it was just an incomprehensible mess, and I knew what was going on! It would be possible to revise them to make them more accessible to a general audience, but I don't know if I want to go to all that trouble for something that maybe six people would be interested in reading.

*is a pedant*

*is also an Aussie*

The expression is "oy vey". The word "oi" is a completely different expression used by Aussies to either attract attention or be patriotic.

LOL! I was just using the alt. spelling for the Yiddish expression. As far as I know (and the internet tells me), you can use either "oi vey" or "oy vey".

Hmm...
Typing "oi vey" into google mostly gets me lots of "did you mean: oy vey?" results...

Down here, you'll find that Aussies in a patriotic mood will end up yelling our favourite chant at the top of their lungs:
"Aussie Aussie Aussie!"
"Oi Oi Oi!"
"Aussie Aussie Aussie!"
"Oi Oi Oi!"
"Aussie!"
"Oi!"
"Aussie!"
"Oi!"
"Aussie Aussie Aussie!"
"Oi Oi Oi!"

:)

Yeah, "oy vey" appears to be the popular spelling. But I'm still getting some instances of people using it often in the other spelling. *shrugs* It's how I learned.

Considering it's such an old saying, I'm not surprised there's alt spellings since standardizing spelling in English has only moved dramatically in the past few centuries. Some old variations still are about.

That's interesting that it's patriotic in Australia!

Isn't it also the case that in British, "oi" is an exclamation that's also used to gain someone's attention or to show one's been offended? Like "Oi! Get off my lawn!" "Oi! I'm standing right here, you berk!"

Yep. It's also used that way in Australia. It's a very versatile word.

Apparently the Yiddish phrase has a ridiculous amount of variation in spelling since it's translated phonetically.

See also: "oi vai" and "oi vei."

I'm not really sure there's a right answer for it, perhaps just a most popular option. :)

What I like is that every culture (just about) seems to have some variation on "oi" to express dismay or what-have-you. In my family is "ai", pronounced "aye". So, you've got "oy" for Yiddish, "oi" for the Commonwealth, and "ai" for Latinates. Fun!

Hmmm. I had seen people talking about how easy-peasy it was, all you have to do is copy and paste a link, upload 10 at a time, etc. So it's not actually as simple as that?

Like I said on your LJ, "is it difficult or time-consuming?" is pretty much my primary factor in deciding whether to bother.

It really depends on what your original posts are like.

Some people will find it easy, but some people have formatting issues (mind you, they've solved the ones that were leading to the biggest problems, now).

Well, there was a bug glitch recently, but they smoothed that out. It's pretty easy to import fics now. And then it's most just point and clicking for tags and fandom notes and such.

Seems to go by quickly now, so I'm not dreading uploading TYSK when I do get around to it.

Yeah, I decided to save the WIP for later, too. I think there are a few phrases and such I'd like to clean up first.

Ah, well. I've been wanting to archive my fic somewhere, and this seemed like a good excuse.

In my opinion, even with all the bugs, AO3 was still the least tedious archive to upload stories to...

Congrats for getting everything save the long fic uploaded. I'm moving at a glacier's pace, mostly because I have apparently written 60-some drabbles. LOL And I've been terribly haphazard about my tags and my summaries on the pieces already up. I fear I'll have to go back to the pieces I've posted and try to impose some unity on them. At some later point...

(And AO3 is my first archive, aside from my own site and allaboutspike, where Laura did all of the work, so I can't really judge its clunkiness. Still, I didn't think it was *too* bad, all things considered, and it does sound as though the powers that be are continuing to make positive changes.)

Yes. I love that there are so many options for tags and things, but my tagging has still been pretty erratic - and I love organizing things and getting them just so!

Regardless, it's been a great chance to get my fic archived somewhere besides my journal. And I do really like the existence of the 'orphan' feature (where you disavow all authorship/connection with fic, in case you ever feeling like leaving fandom entirely), even though I don't expect to ever use it myself.

I need a Giles cross-indexing icon.
