I feel about this the way I feel about the new Sherlock Holmes movie-- it's terrible, but I'm so addicted to the underlying concept I'll go watch it anyway. Plus it will at least be a terribly entertaining trainwreck, if it happens...
I guess what gets me is, why Buffy the vampire Slayer? Why not just create a brand new Slayer and set the whole thing somewhere other than California ('cuz I gotta say, suburban California is not exactly my favorite fictional setting)?
Blarg. I find that I don't really care, honestly - it's a bad idea and I expect it'll tank, and either way it'll have no impact on my beloved series. I think Whedon himself stands to do a lot more damage to the canon (in creative terms, not financial) with his silly comics than this movie does.
