Another drabble, this one not actually for anyone, it just popped into my head. Apparently, once you start thinking in drabbles it's hard to stop... (I'm still thinking on yours, [livejournal.com profile] seapealsh!)

Recipe - Buffy & Dawn

“First you spread the peanut butter.”

She’ll never tell her.

“The tomato sauce goes on top of that.”

She’s... stable, now, besides the door-slamming and the occasional ear-piercing wail -- but she was like that before she found out.

“Then you slice the pickle.”

No point in rocking the boat.

“You need a one-to-one ratio of pickle slices to pepperoni, or it won’t taste right.”

Besides, it’d be cruel.

“Then you just sprinkle the cheese on top and nuke until melted.”

But when the monks made Dawn--

“Ta da! Summers Smorgasbord Pizza.”

--Buffy’s pretty sure they got some things wrong.

Hahahaha! To be fair, I've seen college-aged men make similar concoctions, but yikes! Dawnie can just keep that sandwich.

Tee hee. That's just it - how many of the Dawnish oddities are 'flaws' and how many of them are just, well, Dawn?

Glad you enjoyed. :)

Awwww! This was great. Poor Dawnie and her warped tastebuds, but I feel ever worse for Buffy who probably had to taste that...thing. I loved this line - "She'll never tell her" - it was so beautiful how she's protecting her little sis.

Tee hee. I dunno, I suspect Buffy probably told Dawn she wasn't hungry...

Glad you enjoyed.

That is too funny! I was suspicious about Dawn when she mentioned liking anchovies in Season 7. How many teens like anchovies on their pizza? (now that I've said that, I'll find out there's a million of them)

No kidding. How many anybodys like anchovies on their pizza? Are anchovies even available on pizza anymore? I've heard them joked about for years, but I've never actually seen anyone order them.

Glad you enjoyed. :)

Oh I've had friends and family members order anchovies on their pizzas (Fortunately my significant other does no such thing.)

Every time I see Dawn eating or cooking either in fic or on the show, my mind keeps coming back to this wonderful drabble. It's short but it's stayed with me. I really like explorations of their sisterly dynamic anyway.

Awwww, thank you! I'm a bit sad that I haven't written more of their sisterly dynamic; I do love it so.

It was one of those things that perplexed me about fandom when I first entered it - or rather, "mainstream" fan opinion at a site like the AV Club: that Dawn was "the most annoying character", she was whiny, and that's what her character was reduced to in the fandom hive mind; and that MT couldn't act.

And I agreed with neither. I mean, have these people watched The Body, of The Gift, etc? The way she was introduced on the show was a little shaky (the residue of original plans for Dawn to be 10 years old which would NOT have worked IMO.) But did these folks not notice how complicated she was (dealing with abandonment issues, simultaneously loving and hating buffy, smart and brave and protective of her sister while taking her for granted) and so forth. But I think a lot of those people are the ones who pretty much stopped watching and/or think anything after the Gift sucked?

Maybe? I mean, so many people think anything after S3 sucked, which I find so incomprehensible that I wouldn't even know how to talk to them.

I honestly am not sure where all the Dawn hatred comes from, but I'm kind of sensitive to it. I kind of organized my fannish activity around Spike, so I never had to deal with him getting bashed, and anyway I don't think I'd deal with Spike-bashing the same way as I do Dawn-bashing. Because my response to Dawn-bashing and Dawn-hatred is INSTANT RAGE. As it used to say in my LJ profile, Dawn's my girl, and don't nobody be mean to her. (Not that she can't take them, because Dawn is also fearsome.)

And I <3 Michelle Tractenberg. I fangirl her more than just about any of the other actors on the show - the only other one that I feel nearly as much loyalty to is SMG.

I'm sure the bashing probably made me more defensive as well. And when they call Dawn "whiny"? I think what people are really thinking about are the few (very few - one or two?) times she screeched at the top of her lungs? Like in OAFA. And most of the time, she has pretty good reasons to whine or be upset - just the pitch of her voice, yeah, hard on the ears, But that's different from the context of the situation.

And oh how I love how she loves Willow and Tara as a couple. If I didn't like her already, that moment in the hallway she has with them in SR cemented it for me. In S7 my favorite episode for her might just be CWDP. Potential is the one people think of, and yes she's cool there, backing Amanda - but I'm just knocked out by how brave she is in CWDP - by herself, being shredded to bits, working the spell when running would be the safer option. I liked the scene in the next episode with Willow discovering her, but I was disappointed that there was no follow-up scene with Buffy (or that Buffy didn't have more of a reaction to hearing about the visit from their mom, even on an emotional level), because I'm sure that Buffy would have headed straight to Dawn's room to comfort her.

And yes, part of my love for the later seasons (or I should say 5-7) may have been nudged a little by the opposite reaction in mainstream fandom. S4 is very underrated, also; and every episode which gets labeled "the worst" I find myself saying "no, wait there's really good stuff here!"

My very Italian sense of good food and pizza is now screaming to death. XD

Loved the final punch-line and how you built the tension until that point. Very fine job. I really was expecting something dramatic.

Hee! This drabble still amuses me. I was very proud of the ending. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

And yes, that sounds TERRIBLE.
