Drabble: Recipe
May. 5th, 2009 01:18 pmAnother drabble, this one not actually for anyone, it just popped into my head. Apparently, once you start thinking in drabbles it's hard to stop... (I'm still thinking on yours,
seapealsh!)
Recipe - Buffy & Dawn
“First you spread the peanut butter.”
She’ll never tell her.
“The tomato sauce goes on top of that.”
She’s... stable, now, besides the door-slamming and the occasional ear-piercing wail -- but she was like that before she found out.
“Then you slice the pickle.”
No point in rocking the boat.
“You need a one-to-one ratio of pickle slices to pepperoni, or it won’t taste right.”
Besides, it’d be cruel.
“Then you just sprinkle the cheese on top and nuke until melted.”
But when the monks made Dawn--
“Ta da! Summers Smorgasbord Pizza.”
--Buffy’s pretty sure they got some things wrong.

Date: 2012-12-13 02:57 pm (UTC)Every time I see Dawn eating or cooking either in fic or on the show, my mind keeps coming back to this wonderful drabble. It's short but it's stayed with me. I really like explorations of their sisterly dynamic anyway.

Date: 2012-12-14 03:39 pm (UTC)And I agreed with neither. I mean, have these people watched The Body, of The Gift, etc? The way she was introduced on the show was a little shaky (the residue of original plans for Dawn to be 10 years old which would NOT have worked IMO.) But did these folks not notice how complicated she was (dealing with abandonment issues, simultaneously loving and hating buffy, smart and brave and protective of her sister while taking her for granted) and so forth. But I think a lot of those people are the ones who pretty much stopped watching and/or think anything after the Gift sucked?

Date: 2012-12-14 03:47 pm (UTC)I honestly am not sure where all the Dawn hatred comes from, but I'm kind of sensitive to it. I kind of organized my fannish activity around Spike, so I never had to deal with him getting bashed, and anyway I don't think I'd deal with Spike-bashing the same way as I do Dawn-bashing. Because my response to Dawn-bashing and Dawn-hatred is INSTANT RAGE. As it used to say in my LJ profile, Dawn's my girl, and don't nobody be mean to her. (Not that she can't take them, because Dawn is also fearsome.)
And I <3 Michelle Tractenberg. I fangirl her more than just about any of the other actors on the show - the only other one that I feel nearly as much loyalty to is SMG.

Date: 2012-12-14 04:04 pm (UTC)And oh how I love how she loves Willow and Tara as a couple. If I didn't like her already, that moment in the hallway she has with them in SR cemented it for me. In S7 my favorite episode for her might just be CWDP. Potential is the one people think of, and yes she's cool there, backing Amanda - but I'm just knocked out by how brave she is in CWDP - by herself, being shredded to bits, working the spell when running would be the safer option. I liked the scene in the next episode with Willow discovering her, but I was disappointed that there was no follow-up scene with Buffy (or that Buffy didn't have more of a reaction to hearing about the visit from their mom, even on an emotional level), because I'm sure that Buffy would have headed straight to Dawn's room to comfort her.
And yes, part of my love for the later seasons (or I should say 5-7) may have been nudged a little by the opposite reaction in mainstream fandom. S4 is very underrated, also; and every episode which gets labeled "the worst" I find myself saying "no, wait there's really good stuff here!"
