BSG: well, that's done
Jan. 12th, 2012 06:00 pmUm. Well, then.
Just to be clear: That's not a daring new idea you have there, Ronald Moore. The twist ending where two (or more) spacefaring folks turn out to be the progenitors of the human race is such a cliche, the website of the SFF lit industry professional organization includes it in their list of Common Workshop Story Types. (Search for "Adam and Eve Story.")
The part where Bob Dylan transcends the entire lifespan of human civilization, though, that's new. Congrats.
Smarter and more articulate people than me have no doubt pulled "Daybreak" to bits already, so all you get are my scattered thoughts:
* So, all those 'creature comforts' we're choosing to do without, stuff like antibiotics and steel and electricity? Think we might be missing those in a couple of months?
* Yay, Baltar/Caprica Six. (Betcha they make a couple of their own contributions to the continuation of the human race.)
* Yay, Helo/Athena + Hera.
* PRESIDENT LAMPKIN.
* This whole mission to get Hera was stupid. The fleet needed those parts from Galactica, and Adama dooms the whole ship to near-certain destruction. Over and over and over, his personal feelings get in the way of his professional judgment.
* "I don't mean to rush you, but you are keeping two civilizations waiting."
* I didn't care about any of the finale flashbacks. At all. This show has never failed to impress me with the utter uselessness of its flashbacks.
* Bizarrely, out of everything, I think the character whose development I appreciated most from both a personal and artistic standpoint over the entire course of the series was that of Gaius Baltar. Huh. Further thoughts later, maybe? He was consistent in a way a whole lot of characters weren't. Besides, I always love a redemption arc (of sorts).
* Lee quite grew on me, too, however. (Hi, Poco. *waves*)
* I'd include Athena in there, too, except she had so precious little to do for the second half of the series.
* And Caprica Six! Except I don't really understand the business between her and Saul Tigh. Love? Seriously? On both sides?
* I don't even know what to do with the Kara business. I have nothing to say.
On the series as a whole: I advise interested parties to watch through 2.12, because those first twenty-five episodes (plus miniseries) are thoroughly enjoyable television. I might throw in Razor for good measure.
That's it. Yep.
I think there might be a Big Huge BSG Poll coming up soon.
Onward to Caprica?
