Dear Yule Writer
Nov. 14th, 2010 02:21 pmFirst, thank you so much for being my Santa! I’m thrilled that someone is writing a fic for me. :) I’ve got ideas here for what I want, but if something I say triggers an idea you’d rather write, feel free! Surprise me!
My fic tastes
I love gen stories, often enjoy het, and am not interested in slash. I see romance as one aspect of life among many and I prefer fic that views it the same way. Ditto for sex as one aspect of romance. My favorite sex scenes are the ones off-screen. I am very much a vanilla girl here: no BDSM, non-con, incest, underage sex.
Story elements I love: unlikely alliances of all kinds; unexpected moments of grace between people who are not friends; isolation and/or survival scenarios; emotion that is subtext rather than text; elliptical dialogue.
I have a weakness for angst - some days I just want my heart broken. Even better is when the story starts with angst and climbs out of it into a hope that I can believe in.
I love seeing characters together in fic that didn’t spend much time together in canon. I like fic that seems to be aware of its canon, even if it chooses to diverge from it. I enjoy original characters when they’re multi-dimensional and well-written. I have a marked weakness for hurt/comfort, post-apocalyptic scenarios, and mpreg.
Squicks: Torture involving eyes, teeth, or hands. Most all my other squicks fall under the porn or slash umbrellas, so as long as you're not writing those then I'll remain happily unsquicked.
If you want to know even more about my tastes, I have a sort of laundry list here.
Mary Poppins (1964) - Jane Banks, Michael Banks, Mary Poppins: I'd like a fic that takes the characters and basic scenarios of the movie and twists them into a horror story. If you need inspiration, there's a really fabulous fan-made "trailer" of Mary Poppins as horror (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T5_0AGdFic ), which is what gave me the idea. I'm not at all picky about sticking to canon for this one as long as it still has Mary and the children in early 20th century London. Mix, match, or completely reinvent events as you please! Just please no extreme gore or sexually-related horror; I want to be creeped out, not grossed out.
Does Mary have some deeper, nefarious agenda? Are the children not as innocent as they seem? What inexplicable activity does Bert get up to in between his odd jobs? When it comes to horror, I love the psychological, the supernatural, and the just plain weird - The Haunting of Hill House is my favorite horror novel and I grew up on Alfred Hitchcock's horror anthologies for children. Creep me out!
SeaQuest DSV - Lt. Benjamin Krieg: I'd like a gen story of typical Krieg hijinks, maybe something to go with the prompt, "Just because he was a scheming opportunist didn't mean he didn't have good intentions." Or, a Krieg/Hitchcock friendship story with some sparring and reminiscing over their past relationship. In either case, plot is a plus, though not essential. Or for something completely different, I'd love a fic about Christmas on the SeaQuest in S1 or S2. No slash, please.
I like Krieg because he’s the character given the most opportunity for character complexity of this oh-so-wholesome show, and because he’s certainly the funniest element of it for as long as he’s around. He’s also the only character in S1 that has honest-to-goodness character conflicts with other members of the crew: his ongoing tense-yet-affectionate ex-relationship with Hitchcock was the show’s single best handling of a romantic element, IMO, and the tension (and resolution) between him and Ford in “Nothing But the Truth” are part of what make that my favorite ep of the season. I’m a little sad that that more serious side of him in NBTT was never expanded on (at least until his guest reappearance in S3, I suppose).
Or for something completely different, an ensemble or character-specific seaQuest Christmas fic would be fabulous. A story that focused on O'Neill celebrating his Catholic faith at Christmastime might be especially neat, but I'm a sucker for Christmas in all forms. Feel free to incorporate other midwinter holidays as well.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Any: I'd love to see a story that further develops the implications of the movie's worldbuilding, which I love: the difference in physics between Toontown and the 'real world,' the social interactions between 'toons and live-action people. Anything that explores the boundaries and interactions between the two worlds would be lovely.
I just saw this for the first time and fell in love. Sociological exploration, please! Show me what it's like to live in this world where 'toons and live-action people interact. Show me the dark underbelly or the seedy subcultures or the niche interests. What about prejudices and alliances? Feel free to cross over with any other 'toon fandoms you like, or to invent your own OCs. I'm most familiar with Disney cartoons, including most of the shorts and all the feature-length films, but I'd be happy to have my horizons expanded.
Sunshine - Robin McKinley - Sunshine, Constantine: I'd like a post-novel fic that further develops Sunshine and Constantine's friendship. I love that last scene when it becomes clear that they have not just an alliance but a friendship, and I would love to see what they do together when they're not fighting bad guys. What do they each show to the other of their respective worlds? No romance, please.
I love so many other things about this book, which I go on at great length about in the comments of this post. But most of all, I love love love that, despite the UST, Sunshine and Con's relationship is about friendship, not sex. More of that, please.

Finally: have fun! I have am absolutely thrilled that you're writing for one of my teeny yet beloved fandoms, and I will be excited no matter what you write me. Thank you, thank you!
