Meme: Day 1, Something Old

The Very Small Girl and the Monster (LJ | AO3) - Firefly/BtVS - River+Spike with past Spike/Buffy - 2k, rated G
This is one of those rare fics that I look back on and still think turned out just about exactly how I wanted it. The premise is that River is a Slayer and has been dreaming of the past through the eyes of other Slayers. In particular, since humanity left Earth That Was, those Slayers have been getting training from a dangerous, white-haired man in a long coat. So it's a mix of dreams and River arranging events just so, so she can meet this man for herself.

I'm generally pretty happy with the dreams, and with the Firefly-voice (always tricky), and the River-logic (ditto), and the emotional note that the whole fic finally resolves on. It's a fic that manages to have a lot of heart, I think, even with the crack premise.

I'd never pictured a Buffy/Firefly crossover, but Spike and River.... with her a fledgling slayer is a fantastic combination. I loved her needling Jayne, she does it so well and your Mal voice was spot on.

This is an interesting meme. I just may steal it. :)

Yay, thank you! I find voices in Firefly challenging; they're so distinct, but so easy to get wrong.

Here from reading the story itself.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, since my first experience of you was when you remixed one of my fics, but this still IS surprising in being so richly multi-layered. It’s appallingly easy to oversimplify or romanticize Spike; almost as easy to present River as being either helplessly loopy or preternaturally wise. You seem to avoid both traps almost effortlessly. Well done.

Wow, thank you! Spike's pretty much my favorite character, largely because of all his layers, so I'm really glad to hear that I got some of them across for you. And I agree that River is tricky for the reasons you give. So, thank you very much!

(I've always felt that maybe I cheated a little with that remix; your fic made up such a small part of what I ended up writing. But I'm glad you didn't seem to mind to much.)

That was one of the first crossover fic I've ever read, and it's still my favorite. It's just flawless - the mood, the character voices and the way you made both universes cross in absolutely natural way. I could easily picture it happening onscreen in Firefly and Buffy, which is unfortunately rare thing for crossovers.

Well, 'back in the day' is very relative here, maybe a year or so, I'm very late in both fandoms.
And as a very late (and quite lurky) newcomer, I just must say thank you for all your recs. Your blog will provide me with the excellent reading for another year, I guess.
And I enjoy your own fic tremendously, too. I even read mpreg fic (yes, it's Seraph). And I loved it. And that's all your fault!
