It occurs to me that I haven't mentioned this new project I'm involved in outside of flock, so, behold: [livejournal.com profile] spn_weirdnews! It's a weekly newsletter along the lines of [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter, but focused specifically on rare ships, both RPF and FPF, fic and art.

Also, if you like what you see, feel free to say so on your journal! The newsletter's been promoted on a few comms, but I think word-of-mouth is going to be key, too. It's only useful if people are actually using it, you know?

(Clearly, now that I have uploaded that Meg/Cas icon, I mean to get all possible use out of it...)

:D It means an awful lot to know that people are finding it useful.

As far as getting it going "so fast," I've been talking about something like it since August. It took me that long to decide I was willing to commit to it. :)

Ooooh, I like this! *starts to ask if Sam/Cas counts as "rare" and discovers that my most recent fic has been included* :D

IT IS AWESOME. Did you have any luck with finding help so you can include gen? Because I'd really love that a looot and also I'm feeling so meh about this whol gen/shipping divide lately. :Í

Indeed! Anything except J2, Dean/Cas, and Sam/Dean counts as a rare ship (including threesomes involving those pairings).

:DDDD

Regarding extra help, nobody's been jumping up and down going "Pick me! Pick me!" and I haven't gone looking yet. I figure I'd wait until the newsletter's been going at least two months before I worried about expanding.

I feel you about the gen/shipping divide, but I'm not sure a newsletter is a great avenue for combatting it. I mean, the whole philosophy of most newsletters involves dividing things up into neat little categories, and I can't off-hand think of another way to do it that would be, you know, useful to most people. (If we do expand to include gen, I still want to go with my idea of having the gen newsletter appear on different days.)

Oh no, I didn't mean you'd have to combat it, I just mentioned it because read a lot oh, hm, shippy gen? relationship-focused fic? well, stuff that I feel is equally relevant to my interests but wouldn't get listed just because there's no X/Y in the title and that makes me sad. Idk, when a fic is not outright romance I'm just kind of clueless about what makes gen gen except the author deciding it is. Sorry, rambling, sleeping now.

Yeah, that line between shippy and gen has fascinated me for a long time; I think I've concluded that it's a largely artificial one agreed upon by fandom because the majority of what fandom is interested in lies firmly on one side or the other of that line.

Outside fandom, though, I would say that most stories straddle the line. Most blockbuster movies, for example.
