B5: 1.05 Parliament of Dreams
Jan. 9th, 2013 01:57 pmGood Stuff
* N'Toth
* The plot to assassinate G'Kar
* a narn in glasses
*
Bad Stuff
* Everything to do with Sinclair and Catherine. OH MY GOODNESS Y'ALL. I can feel the soap operaness on me.
* Given the difficulty of demonstrating Earth's "dominant belief system," one would think the show might question whether other races might also not be religiously monolithic? But apparently not.

G'KAR: That's your flight. I suggest you board quickly. With luck, they will never find you. But if they do, you will know pain.
N'TOTH: And you will know fear.
G'KAR: And then you will die. Have a pleasant flight.

Date: 2013-01-10 12:23 am (UTC)I had the same problem on rewatch. JMS said the alien religions weren't meant to be monolithic, and there's some evidence of it later in the show, but that doesn't come across in this episode, which bugged me.
G'Kar and Na'Toth, individually and in their interaction, made up for that, though, making this one of the s1 eps I like quite a lot.
(I'd totally forgotten this is where Catherine Sakai appears, though. Such is my level of caring about her and Sinclair XD)

Date: 2013-01-10 02:22 am (UTC)That always bugged me too! IIRC we learn more about other/ multiple alien non-religious monolithy (I'm not totally sure that phrase makes sense, but you know what I mean) later in the series.
I think this is the first episode where I really like G'Kar. And N'Toth is so made of win!
I'm obviously going to have to pull out the DVDs. I've missed this show!

Date: 2013-01-10 11:13 am (UTC)In fact, this is one of my favourite season 1 eps, although it miffs me that there are no Sikhs in the lineup at the end.

Date: 2013-01-17 02:45 am (UTC)Ugh...THIS episode. The first time I ever watched this series was at C. I put a rant about this episode on my blog at the time.
I have an insight from rewatching the show while knitting that may help you. If you don't look at Sinclair, your impression of him will improve. He is doing a good job with his voice acting; it's his body language that is terrible.

Date: 2013-01-17 11:30 pm (UTC)I'll have try not looking at Sinclair and see if that helps. I had the impression that his voice was the worst part, actually, but maybe it's the disconnect that's bothering me.
