Mpreg Recs Post
Feb. 7th, 2010 03:42 pmAfter my last post, it seemed worthwhile to link folks to the good stuff. 'Cuz it is out there, in practically every flavor you can think of. So here's a preliminary list, with a few disclaimers.
First: A lot of the the best-written mpreg is short. It's written by excellent writers who happen to be feeling cracky and whip out an mpreg one-shot for kicks. So there's a lot of short stuff here and even moreso for the Buffyverse, where I included pretty much everything I thought worth reccing.
Second: The non-Buffyverse recs are a bit biased towards fandoms I like. So, more Potterverse fics and fewer Stargate: Atlantis and Torchwood fics. Also keep in mind that in many cases, my grasp of relevent canon is weak. I can’t vouch for trueness to canon events, worldbuilding, or characterization, only for the actual quality of the writing and/or the interesting use of mpreg tropes.
Third: I tried to restrict this to items of possible interest even for folks who aren't mpreg fans. Again, I'm a little biased; I'm not actually sure if I managed it.
Finally, if you know of something fabulous that's not on this list, please, tell me! I'm always interested in reading new stuff.
Now, Buffy/Angelverse (sorted roughly by length)
Corpus et Sanguis, by
47_trek_47. Giles/Willow, past Giles/Ethan. NC-17. My first-foremost-and-always Buffyverse mpreg rec. Slides nicely into S5, with satisfying plot mechanics, some great character dynamics, and really excellent voices.
Expecting, by
entrenous88 - Spike/Xander. Set in a vague AU S4. Spike and Xander open a box they shouldn’t, resulting in spell-induced sex, unsuspected feelings, and pregnant Xander. The plot is cracky and it knows it, and makes up for it with great character voices all around. Lots of good funny.
untitled Ats S5 ficlet by dovil - Ats S5. Spike/Angel. Utterly silly plot with sharp, amusing characterizations. If this happened to Spike at this point in his arc, this is about how I’d expect him to react.
Well, Gosh! That's Different!, by
stoney321. Mayor Wilkins, natch. Unsentimental, rather squicky, and even canon-compliant. Mpreg's not all fluff and babies, folks.
Good Girl, Spike, by
spikes_evilbint. NC-17. Non-canon AU in which the Initiative has been working openly for quite some time now. In particular, they’ve found an unexpected use for male vampires. This is a dark, dark fic of which darkness the slavery and non-con mpreg is only the first part. Takes certain liberties with plot logic.
Dog in the Manger, by
lynenne - Ats S5. Illyria-sponsored insta-pregnancy, perhaps written in reaction to schmoopy mpreg. No sentiment to be found in this one, folks.
Fur or Felt: The Cautionary Tale of Puppet Angel, by
spikendru - Ats S5. Angel thinks being turned into a puppet and mauled by a werewolf are the most traumatic things that could happen to him today. He’s wrong. Joyously cracky.
Baby Daddy, by
mabus101. Drabble. Darla tried everything. Everything.
New Mother, by
deird1. Drabble.

Outside the Buffyverse (sorted by fandom)
Misery to Man, by
trinityofone - SGA. Shepperd/McKay. Uses the angsty mpreg premise as a springboard for even darker, bleaker meditations. Understated, haunting, creative use of the trope, and just a really remarkable piece of fic.
Bric-a-Brac Childbearing, by
scribblinlenore - SGA. Shepperd/McKay. NC-17. One of the better examples I've seen of mpreg as babyfic fluff for slasherfolk.
Charade, by
wisdomeagle - SG1. Jack/Daniel. One of those short, excellently characterized things.
Hexed!, by randominity - Harry Potter. Harry/Draco. What I like best about this is the relationship dynamic: forced proximity that warms to friendship and finally something more, all through spare, understated dialogue and interactions. Plus, awkward first time sex, which is almost always endearing in a fic.
untitled werewolf piece, by
florahart - Harry Potter Lupin/Snape, with Lupin/Black backstory. Brief, so sparse as to be practically all dialogue, endearingly awkward.
Coming to Terms, by
rurounihime. Harry/Draco. If there's such a thing as Potterverse noir mpreg, this is it.
In Those Days, At Night, Promises Kept, Precipice, and Liminal, by
coffeejunkii - Harry Potter. Harry/Draco. The war-is-going-badly AU of the recs list. Harry and Draco are on the run. Basically: Angst, poverty, fugitives. This fic'll probably appeal to you exactly as much as those things do.
Expedience, by cupidsbow - Torchwood. Jack/Ianto. Although mpreg is canon in TW, I haven't found much that was terribly exciting. This is by far my favorite: short, well-written, and oh the angst.
Feed Me to the Tabloid Monster, by
apocalypsos – X-Men comics. Bobby/Rogue. Do-gooder aliens decide to give Bobby and Rogue a baby, without taking certain physiological norms into account. Light-hearted, funny, and sweet.
Full-On Annunciation, by vulgarweed - Good Omens (Pratchett and Gaiman). Crowley/Az. Short, excellently voiced (although Gabriel gets the best lines), high amusement value per word.
The Captain's Vessel, by
erinya - PotC. Jack, Elizabeth, Jack/Will backstory. The fic I've most recently been in raptures over, which is why I'm reccing it even though it's a possibly-abandoned WIP. Although neither Jack nor Elizabeth are precisely as I remember them in canon, I find these incarnations fascinating. Humor borne of excellent writing and perfect character voices; angst borne of same. Man, would I love to see that last chapter finished.
Alteration Finds, by zulu – Jeeves/Wooster (Woodhouse). Lacking any justification whatsoever for the existence of this trope in this universe, the joy of this fic is the absolutely spot-on narrative voice as Bertie describes, quite delicately, the latest pickle he's gotten himself into.
