SPN: Provenance and Dead Man's Blood
Mar. 20th, 2011 10:58 pmBSG has been dragging so badly lately that tonight I showed the roommate some Supernatural instead. We started with Hell House, for the fun, Something Wicked because she was still up for more, and Dead Man's Blood (which I hadn't seen yet).
She enjoyed it. In fact, she pronounced it "better than Buffy."
There may have been some accusations of blasphemy at that point.
She prefers it because the tone is more serious and because she says the characters have more depth. I argued the good cause for a few minutes, but at the end of the day I was just tickled she wanted to watch more SPN with me, and after all, she did watch basically all of BtVS on my say-so. I think I'll keep her. *g*
Something Wicked (again)
A Something Wicked rewatch note: really nice scoring on this ep. I liked the whimsy of it.
Provenance
I'm opposed to casual sex on principle, and aside from that, Dean egging Sam on about getting laid has an unsavory whiff of boys' locker room about it. Yet he's so clearly genuinely concerned about Sam that I have trouble holding it against him. The brotherly concern for Sam and Sam's grief over Jess was awfully sweet and kind of adorable.
And I actually sort of liked Sarah Blake. She and Sam had a whole lot more chemistry than Dean and the Cassie girl did.
As for the evil painting, I was a little disappointed. I feel like the whole plot could have been cooler than it was. However, I did have an idea the father in the painting was looking at the daughter for a reason. Yay me.
Eh. Definitely the minor episode of the disk.
Dead Man's Blood
In which there is Plot Development and we learn that gun manufacturers of the old west had mystical powers. Given the American backcountry roots of the show so far, that actually seems appropriate. I kind of like it. An mystically enhanced gun certainly matches the flavor of the show.
Also the show agrees with me that Sam and Dean are assets to John, not liabilities. (You were all giggling at me behind your keyboards last week, weren't you?) And Dean stands up to John, yay Dean!
I'm still not a John fan, you guys. I see how he's become what he's become, but that doesn't mean I like it. I'm totally on Sam's side on this one.
In fact, I seem to be warming up to Sam in general. I think it's just that I've seen more of him, and particularly I've watched him deal with civilians, which is one of his strengths. He's a very compassionate person and openly so, and I appreciate that. Also, in terms of caution vs. recklessness, I definitely come down on the Sam side of things.
Can't say I cared about the vampires one way or the other. There was some unfortunate acting, especially from the main female vampire. Meh.

Yes, this is what makes Sammy Sammy. He is good at talking to people and being sensitive enough, which Dean sometimes...isn't, LOL.
You guys, I think I might be falling in love with this show.
YES.

Date: 2011-03-21 04:49 pm (UTC)That was FABULOUS. Usually Sam's pretty good at keeping his cool, but he just completely lost it that time.
Likewise, the bit in Something Wicked when the little old lady scares the living heck out of Dean? Also hilarious.
YES.
I never meant this to happen! *wails*

Date: 2011-03-21 04:55 pm (UTC)Oh yes, I also love that.

Hey, neither did I. SPN was just one of those shows I was going to watch. I never thought I'd get obsessed, certainly not fandom obsessed. BtVS was the only thing that had grabbed my fannish attention in the last five years.

Date: 2011-03-21 05:54 pm (UTC)I really don't get the Dean!girl vs. Sam!girl stuff. It's ridiculous and annoying. I like most of the characters on the show, but I was/am that way with the Whedonverse, too.
The one thing I like about the SPN vampires is that they are monsters. I like a good monster.

Date: 2011-03-21 06:14 pm (UTC)You'd know a lot more about this than I would; everything I know about SPN fandom is second-hand. I guess maybe I could see it if the person had strong rivalries with their real-life siblings? Or maybe if they felt "their" Winchester was losing screen time to the other Winchester. I feel that way about Lee Adama sometimes; it isn't that I hate him so much, but that there are so many other characters I'd rather be watching! *g*

Date: 2011-03-21 06:32 pm (UTC)Of course, then I got snarky when someone insisted that Sam had never shown even an ounce of compassion or empathy in his entire run on the show, and was (temporarily) suspended.
It's gotten particularly bad since Sera Gamble became showrunner. Think Marti Noxon & Spike, only with even less justification.

Date: 2011-03-21 06:36 pm (UTC)Yanno, I try hard to stay in the sane, civil corner of fandom, but every once in a while I am reminded that fandom is NOT SANE.

Date: 2011-03-21 06:40 pm (UTC)Actually, I totally avoided spoilers back when Buffy was airing. I have no idea what happened. :D

Date: 2011-03-22 03:39 am (UTC)For real, though, I think SPN do MoTW one-shots waaayyyyy better than BtVS. So, can't argue with that.
I do not feel the John love, either. I just can't get over how screwed up Dean and Sam are because of him. Meh.
And word about Sam and his openly compassionate self. The love first came for me in that episode where he empathised so strongly with the abused boy, even though the boy was doing monstrous things. OH, SAM.

Date: 2011-03-22 04:10 am (UTC)It's the truth. Because SPN actually cares about its MotW and BtVS almost never did (with a few stunning exceptions, including Hush, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Killed by Death, which doesn't get talked about much but which I've always had a soft spot for).

Date: 2011-03-22 04:11 am (UTC)Well, plus there's the fact that he tries to get the ladies and Sam tries not to get them. *g*
