Veronica Mars 1.1 - 1.8
Oct. 10th, 2010 08:10 pmI had three plans this weekend: do work-related mathy things, knit, and watch much TV. I succeeded.
Veronica – Broken pretty badly by a long chain of events she had no control over. Bitter, combative, socially isolated (partly by choice), lots of smarts – she's practically designed to appeal to me. Can’t say I support all her actions – getting Logan suspended crossed a line, as far as I was concerned, and I’d just as well prefer she didn’t meddle with the police department, the fire department, the justice department, and school security – but I like that story doesn’t always support them either (although still more often than I’d like).
Logan – He’s pretty much a scumbag. But, his dad’s abusive! And he’s awfully cute! And he occasionally displays hints of potential humanity! I have the feeling I’m being set up to like Logan a lot, and I’m feeling a bit resentful of the manipulation. Even though/especially because I suspect it will work.
Duncan – Pretty decent guy with severe emotional troubles, most of them due to him clearly knowing something we don’t about Lilly’s murder. I expect we’ll find that he broke up with Veronica for her own good – some sleazy dealings related to his family, maybe. Or, ooh, if he discovered that she’s his father’s daughter as is being suggested, well, breaking up is better than incest, y/y?
Wallace – Can do no wrong. Could maybe use some more depth.
Troy – Never did trust the kid.
Class issues – I’m intrigued by how the class issues are played here. It’s not something that usually crops up in my SF TV, so it’s interesting here how much attention is paid to the rich kids’ views of their ‘domestics’ and the casual wealth that results in, for example, getting in trouble for losing your dad’s Beamer. (We won’t mention that even the have-nots drive convertibles and very shiny motorcycles.)
The Big Mystery – Obviously there are a lot of threads here: Jake Kane, Duncan Kane, Lianne Mars, Abel Koontz, Weevil. I’m pretty sure I don’t have near enough information to go on yet.
Ep notes:
“Return of the Kane” – Logan’s boxing scheme has got to the be the scummiest thing I have heard of in quite some time. More showcasing of the class issues, here – rich kids dehumanizing poor folk for entertainment value. Ew ew ew. OTOH, the belt-selecting scene is, in retrospect, eerie in a breaks-your-heart sort of way. Excellently filmed there. (Also, I was very confused: was that Wanda at Logan’s house? Or just some random woman I confused with Wanda?)
“Like a Virgin” – the whole purity test money-making scheme made no sense. Anyone smart enough to somehow take advantage of school login information for her own independent application is smart enough to actually, yanno, be able to see the login information. Methinks IT guy has serious security leak.
In other things, I was getting a serious Willow vibe off Mac (who is pretty fab and whom I’d like to see more of).
And in yet other things, did no one lie on the purity test? Really really? Because I know I’m totally honest when I fill out random Internet questionnaires.
“The Girl Next Door” – It’s Parker! Rocking the manly beard! And being not a total scumbag!

Haha, the first time I saw that episode, I TOTALLY thought he'd killed her, solely based on Parker being a scumbag. Nice bit of misdirection by casting, Show. :)

Date: 2010-10-11 09:54 pm (UTC)Hee! I appreciate your restraint. Half my point in posting this now is y'all's entertainment value; the other half is me making a record of my opinions so later I can go back and say, "Ahah, see, I knew it!"

That's all I'll say, because if I say anything else, it's bound to accidentally be a spoiler.
