[livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 has posted her thoughts on the latest S8 issue. In reading them, it occurs to me that I'd be a lot more hurt by Joss's characterizations of my beloved characters if they made a little more sense. It isn't as though our characters haven't got it in them to go very, very dark, as we saw Buffy go in S6. In fact, I'd say there remains a whole lot of untapped potential for dark!BtVS. It's just that Joss's way of getting Buffy and Angel there in S8 are so cracky that I can't take them seriously.

Whatever, Joss. I'm going to go rewatch this cool TV show I have. I think you worked on it at some point, but you must've forgotten. It has these neat characters that are flawed and frequently broken and yet still largely sympathetic, and until an unfortunate last season their actions always grew out of what came before. You should check it out sometime - the first couple of seasons are on Hulu.

Yeah, that's how I feel too. In a way I'm quite happy that it's all so ridiculous, because it means that there's no possible way of taking it seriously, ever. (I've not read anything about #36 yet - I'm waiting for a download - but people's reactions are... well.)

And your note to Joss make me laugh.

Exactly. Whenever I start actually being concerned about S8, I think, "centaur Dawn!" and then I feel better. (Which is beside the point, really, since plot crackiness is a whole other animal than character crackiness, but it helps anyway.)

Well, your icon makes me laugh, so we're even. :)

Word. I have finally managed to reach the point where I just don't care anymore. It's a nice feeling.

I don't think I'm quite there. But I'm awfully close.

I've got my fingers crossed that I won't relapse.

It does make me feel better that the vast majority of people have no idea that the comics even exist, so I don't think it will taint the show too much outside of Whedon fandom.

Exactly. I'm sure it means no more to most people than any of the other comics, or those truly horrible media tie-ins. (I tried to read one one time. I failed.)

First episode--brilliance. Second episode--not all that great and full of icky race!fail. Third episode--solid. I look forward to more!

Well, with only three episodes I have half a chance of catching up, right? Maybe I'll take a look.

I'd say there's a very good chance! And hey--if you only watch the first one, you've still seen the best of it.
