Because I'm avoiding the lesson plans I'm supposed to be writing:
Comment with the last really fabulous piece of fanfic you read (or, alternately, the last piece that you just really loved, regardless of degree of fabulousness) - short or long, old or new, by a BNF or someone you've never heard of, any pairing, any rating. Share the love!
(Regarding the title of this post: it's Spanish and translates to "Tell me!", which is a common greeting here in Central America, especially over the phone or by a service person. I rather like it, because it's so very direct.
There. You've had your Spanish lesson for the day. *g*)

Date: 2010-01-20 03:17 am (UTC)It is the truth. And yet Herself's writing and characterization are so excellent that I've read most of her oeuvre anyway, and just read around most of the smutty parts. I realize that this is rather missing the point, but the parts that I do read are so good... *g*

Date: 2010-01-20 12:58 am (UTC)I'm assuming you meant Buffyverse stuff? Because my favorite recent fic was this one, but I don't know if you'd be interested.
As far as Buffyverse stuff goes, the last one I added to my bookmarks over there was Something for the Pain, which is very sweet S7 fic (I'm gonna convince you to love it someday!).
And the funniest one I've read recently is Gonna Make You Bark, which is gen and AtS S5 and hilarious.
I highly recommend all of the above.

Date: 2010-01-20 02:56 am (UTC)Hee. Despite my general S7 antipathy, I'll read most anything by Ruuger. :)
And I'd heard of the last one, too, but not read it yet - clearly it is time to fix that!

Date: 2010-01-20 03:04 am (UTC)I'd be interested in your reboot thoughts, as mine are not generally accepted, and I feel like you'd probably agree with me (I like vindication!). So if you ever get around to watching it, do let me know what you think!
Ruuger's fic is really lovely; I don't know that I've read all of her stuff, but I definitely want to check it all out now.
I hope you enjoy them!

Date: 2010-01-20 03:17 am (UTC)The important thing to remember is that it's been a long time since I watched TOS more than an episode here and there--like childhood long. So most of my memories of it are of the "OMG SPOCK IS SO COOL" and "OMG CAN I BE UHURA" variety, without much more depth than that (Plus, I grew up on NG and am madly obsessed with Picard. So there's that, too).
So with the reboot I greatly disliked Zachary Quinto's Spock. Probably because Nimoy's Spock is so iconic in my mind, and I just adore him. But Quinto's seemed so bitter and kind of full of himself in ways that Nimoy never was. I may have squealed out loud when Nimoy showed up--even though I was spoiled and knew he was going to!
I didn't like Spock/Uhura (though I like the idea of it in TOS) because I thought Spock was a jerk, and also because I didn't think the actors had any chemistry. I didn't buy their relationship, despite the fact that I went into it wanting to.
On the other hand, I liked Chris Pine's Kirk waaaay more than Shatner's, probably because I found him way more likable than Shatner. I appreciate Shatner as a cultural instituion--I could watch him "sing" "Rocket Man" over and over again and never get tired of it--but I never really liked Kirk all that much, except when he and Spock and/or McCoy had a BFF moment. On his own, Kirk had no appeal to me in TOS. I really found him likable in the reboot, though.
I loved Urban as McCoy, but his "accent" drove me crazy. I have a bit of a crush on Anton Yelchin, so that may have affected the fact that I wanted to pinch his cheeks all the way through the movie. And I adore Simon Pegg, but he didn't seem very Scotty-like. And I was just disappointed every time John Cho opened his mouth and George Takei's voice didn't come out. I adored Zoe Saldana, but I'm not sure I bought her completely as Uhura, either.
But even with my "I don't completely buy these people as the characters they're supposed to be," I loved them (except for Spock, who drove me crazy) for who they were and I totally bought them as being a big team that would develop and kick ass and love each other. So I ended up liking the movie.
Wow. That was probably overkill. Sorry to ramble at you like that!

Date: 2010-01-20 03:38 am (UTC)Sorry, I don't have many thoughts on the reboot beyond "Oh, that was shiny." I just wanted to hear your opinion. :)

Date: 2010-01-20 03:41 am (UTC)Apparently, I had more thoughts than I thought I did. Starting out, it was just going to be "I don't like nu!Spock." But then I started rambling...

Date: 2010-01-21 12:45 am (UTC)And oh, I adore Long Day's Journey. I'd read a bunch of Anaross's stuff and recognized how good a writer she was, but it wasn't until that story that I fell in love. The Cordy&Spike bonding! The Buffy&Harmony bonding! Everything with Harmony, really. Yummy.
I will definitely have to check out that Spike&Angel piece. I've heard wonderful things about girlpire, but mostly about her slash; I'm most interested to check out something gen.
Thanks for all the linkiness!

eta for spelling fail
Post chosen/NFA It starts out with a shanshued Angel and Buffy who get together and then realize that their cookies may be baked, but they grew up in different directions. It then really becomes a friendship fic with Buffy and Spike, with the Willow and Xander. It's only the three chapters so far (life interfered with MC's story for the moment) but it's a really interesting and I think believable set up. She's been really good about always finishing her fics so far, so I rec it it as a WIP.
