Because I'm avoiding the lesson plans I'm supposed to be writing:

Comment with the last really fabulous piece of fanfic you read (or, alternately, the last piece that you just really loved, regardless of degree of fabulousness) - short or long, old or new, by a BNF or someone you've never heard of, any pairing, any rating. Share the love!

(Regarding the title of this post: it's Spanish and translates to "Tell me!", which is a common greeting here in Central America, especially over the phone or by a service person. I rather like it, because it's so very direct.

There. You've had your Spanish lesson for the day. *g*)

I'm currently reading Herself's Let's Get Lost. Post-S2 Spuffy with Buffy meeting up with Spike in New York. Long and very smutty. Very lovely. :)

This is also my favorite fic of all time, so seconding this rec.

Ah ha! Yep, I've read that one, too. She actually started a sequel to it that I liked even better, The Proper Slayer, which dealt with all the fallout of the long sexy summer, but unfortunately it's been a few years now since she updated it...

I'm so behind on fanfic. Most people have already read what I'm reading now. *sigh*

I wouldn't have thought that would be your thing. Aren't you the one that prefers less smutty stuff? I might be getting people mixed up...

It is the truth. And yet Herself's writing and characterization are so excellent that I've read most of her oeuvre anyway, and just read around most of the smutty parts. I realize that this is rather missing the point, but the parts that I do read are so good... *g*

I've been reading over at AO3! So I actually have an answer!

I'm assuming you meant Buffyverse stuff? Because my favorite recent fic was this one, but I don't know if you'd be interested.

As far as Buffyverse stuff goes, the last one I added to my bookmarks over there was Something for the Pain, which is very sweet S7 fic (I'm gonna convince you to love it someday!).

And the funniest one I've read recently is Gonna Make You Bark, which is gen and AtS S5 and hilarious.

I highly recommend all of the above.

Alas, I haven't seen the ST reboot yet. But I've definitely heard of that fic from other folks on the flist, so it must be really something...

Hee. Despite my general S7 antipathy, I'll read most anything by Ruuger. :)

And I'd heard of the last one, too, but not read it yet - clearly it is time to fix that!

Hee! Actually, you probably just heard about it from me, as I am harping on it lately.

I'd be interested in your reboot thoughts, as mine are not generally accepted, and I feel like you'd probably agree with me (I like vindication!). So if you ever get around to watching it, do let me know what you think!

Ruuger's fic is really lovely; I don't know that I've read all of her stuff, but I definitely want to check it all out now.

I hope you enjoy them!

[livejournal.com profile] snickfic, feel free not to read this if you feel like it will taint your viewing, should you watch it.

The important thing to remember is that it's been a long time since I watched TOS more than an episode here and there--like childhood long. So most of my memories of it are of the "OMG SPOCK IS SO COOL" and "OMG CAN I BE UHURA" variety, without much more depth than that (Plus, I grew up on NG and am madly obsessed with Picard. So there's that, too).

So with the reboot I greatly disliked Zachary Quinto's Spock. Probably because Nimoy's Spock is so iconic in my mind, and I just adore him. But Quinto's seemed so bitter and kind of full of himself in ways that Nimoy never was. I may have squealed out loud when Nimoy showed up--even though I was spoiled and knew he was going to!

I didn't like Spock/Uhura (though I like the idea of it in TOS) because I thought Spock was a jerk, and also because I didn't think the actors had any chemistry. I didn't buy their relationship, despite the fact that I went into it wanting to.

On the other hand, I liked Chris Pine's Kirk waaaay more than Shatner's, probably because I found him way more likable than Shatner. I appreciate Shatner as a cultural instituion--I could watch him "sing" "Rocket Man" over and over again and never get tired of it--but I never really liked Kirk all that much, except when he and Spock and/or McCoy had a BFF moment. On his own, Kirk had no appeal to me in TOS. I really found him likable in the reboot, though.

I loved Urban as McCoy, but his "accent" drove me crazy. I have a bit of a crush on Anton Yelchin, so that may have affected the fact that I wanted to pinch his cheeks all the way through the movie. And I adore Simon Pegg, but he didn't seem very Scotty-like. And I was just disappointed every time John Cho opened his mouth and George Takei's voice didn't come out. I adored Zoe Saldana, but I'm not sure I bought her completely as Uhura, either.

But even with my "I don't completely buy these people as the characters they're supposed to be," I loved them (except for Spock, who drove me crazy) for who they were and I totally bought them as being a big team that would develop and kick ass and love each other. So I ended up liking the movie.

Wow. That was probably overkill. Sorry to ramble at you like that!

Ah. Interesting.

Sorry, I don't have many thoughts on the reboot beyond "Oh, that was shiny." I just wanted to hear your opinion. :)

From: [identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com
Hee! That's totally fine! And it was shiny, wasn't it? It did shine very well!

Apparently, I had more thoughts than I thought I did. Starting out, it was just going to be "I don't like nu!Spock." But then I started rambling...

Ha, my most recent bookmarked fic (http://captanddeastar.livejournal.com/9278.html) is pretty much the counterpart to [livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42's Star Trek rec.

The last buffyverse fic in my bookmarks was All The Sky You Need (http://home.comcast.net/~wesleysgirl/fanfiction/allthesky.html). I see a space theme emerging!

Alas, I haven't seen the ST reboot yet. I already suspect that I'll love Uhuru to itty bitty bits, though, so when I have seen it I'll have to come back to this fic.

And what little I've read of Wesleysgirl has been excellent - she lured me into reading Spike/Dawn by making it post-apocolyptic, the tricky woman. :)

A few from the Buffyverse, and some from elsewhere.

Spuffy:
Dirty Back Road and its sequels by The Deadly Hook.

Long Day's Journey and more by anaross.

Spuffy and Ensemble:
If it's Tuesday, this must be Sunnydale and more by Miss Murchison.

Spike:
Ingression by his_luv_pet.

Spike & Angel:
The First Few Steps by girlpire.

The following non-Buffyverse fics are one-shots.

The X-files:
Black Hole Season by Penumbra.
(I left the X-files fandom ten years ago, but I still read this for its incredible blend of science and poetry.)

Torchwood:
Twenty things to do in Cardiff when you're dead by phineyj. (About an undead guy. Mentions BtVS.)

Harry Potter:
Mors Mortis by kindkit. (Featuring an apocalypse and an immortal.)

You and I were talking about Ingression fairly recently, weren't we? Or am I thinking of someone else? Either way, it's quite interesting, isn't it? There's so little Buffyverse fic that engages with any kind of organized religion. It's no wonder, I suppose, considering how terribly muddled the Buffyverse is about metaphysics.

And oh, I adore Long Day's Journey. I'd read a bunch of Anaross's stuff and recognized how good a writer she was, but it wasn't until that story that I fell in love. The Cordy&Spike bonding! The Buffy&Harmony bonding! Everything with Harmony, really. Yummy.

I will definitely have to check out that Spike&Angel piece. I've heard wonderful things about girlpire, but mostly about her slash; I'm most interested to check out something gen.

Thanks for all the linkiness!

You're right, we did have a conversation about Ingression! No wonder it leapt to my attention when I was browsing for titles to post here :)

Harmony in Journey may be my favorite characterization of her. I should read that again soon.

New Story by [livejournal.com profile] msclawdia

prologue

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

eta for spelling fail

Post chosen/NFA It starts out with a shanshued Angel and Buffy who get together and then realize that their cookies may be baked, but they grew up in different directions. It then really becomes a friendship fic with Buffy and Spike, with the Willow and Xander. It's only the three chapters so far (life interfered with MC's story for the moment) but it's a really interesting and I think believable set up. She's been really good about always finishing her fics so far, so I rec it it as a WIP.

[livejournal.com profile] msclawdia is one of those writers that should be better known IMO...

Well, I read it and enjoyed it quite a lot, so clearly having seen the show isn't a prerequisite. I think my favorite part might have been the guys' summary at the end: "We confused a vampire with too many clothing choices," etc. Hee! (I have to say, I'm as mystified as they were about Spike's selective reapplication of the tanning lotion.)
