I think I must be capable of writing fluff only by accident. I'm sitting here trying to write Anya/Xander fluff and ending up with all this character-study stuff instead.

(Actually, I do fine writing fluff in a larger context - Seraph abounds in fluff, after all. I just can't seem to write it by itself.)

This is just like FFF last year, for which I ended up writing the Oz character study when I really think my requestee just wanted something cracktastic. Alas.

If you call it fluff when there's a surge of emotional sweetness, yes, you reach that in Seraph and it's great. Fluff per se doesn't work. Like everything else, you build to it, otherwise it's just unpalatable.
But as long as it gets you to write more good stuff, by all means keep trying!

Eh... maybe? I dunno. Different people have different definitions of the word. To me it usually means light-heartedness, humor, with no angst or bodily peril and nothing serious at stake.

Like this, for example. Straight fluff, IMO, but I wrote it by accident.

Maybe that's it. Maybe I just need to figure how to build to it. Hmm. *ponders*

This is one of those times when you see through my imperfect knowledge of the language...(kindly including a world like "fluff" in an otherwise dignified language)...and of course I've read a lot of fluff that is exactly what you say it is, I was just going ad lib with my very muddled imagination at a very late hour of the night! :)

Oh, let me assure you, English is anything but dignified. It's part of why I like it so much. I'm having trouble thinking of good examples of undignified English words, but here are two: bellybutton and umbrella (which actually comes straight from the Latin, I'm told).

And no worries about the definition of fluff - there are lots of different ones, I believe, and that just happens to be mine. Besides, according to your LJ you've been in fandom significantly longer than me; you'd know better than I what the standard usage is. :) I just wanted to clarify which way I was using it.
