Fic Year in Review
Jan. 1st, 2009 09:44 pmSummary: my first year in fanfic
So, in April I watched my first Buffy episode. In June I wrote my own first bit of fanfic and asked folks at my other LJ for fic recommendations. In July I posted my first bit of fanfic. In November I signed up for Yuletide...
Fics written and posted: 7 (combined 8000 words)
Also, 29k on the crackfic, and 2800 on other unfinished/unposted pieces.
Fic I’m Proudest Of: Um, the crackfic? But that’s not really helpful, since no one's seen it yet. So, probably Bloody Unnatural, in which I managed to do everything I wanted to do and do not, even now, feel as though there are any words out of place. In my minimalist mode of fic, this is, to my mind, by far my best piece.
Biggest Surprise: What Became of Marie La Fleur, written for Yuletide as an extra treat. This fic kind of wrote itself - I saw the prompt while yulestalking, got the gist of the first drabble, and away it went. I love the voice in this. I love that I managed to give one of those silly, fawning girls some dignity. I love the friendship that grows up in the fic, and how even as friends, Belle and Marie remain two distinct and radically different people. I... just like a whole lot of things about this fic, none of which were really conscious when I wrote it. Unfortunately, since it was writing itself, when it stopped several drabbles before the end I couldn’t figure out how to finish it. There’s not really a climax, it just sort of peters out. Oh, well.
Hardest Fic: Definitely my assigned Yulefic, Not Monster Nor Stranger for Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book. I think I might function much better in media fandoms than book fandoms - I keep wanting to match the voice of the original work, which I find nerve-wracking. I finally gave up trying to match on this one. Plus, it was for someone else, for Yuletide, so I really, really wanted it to be what they wanted - also nerve-wracking. I kind of adore the original character I wrote, though, and I suspect she’ll show up in my original fiction at some point.
Most Revealing Fic: Revealing of character, probably my matched set of Darla&Spike stories, A Right Sorry Couple of Vamps and Bloody Unnatural. I got to feel out Darla's character and even a bit about the relationship between them in a way I hadn't before. Revealing of author...? Not sure about this one.
Goals for next year: Finish a rough draft of the crackfic (which really, honestly needs a title here soon). Find a couple of hardy souls to beta the crackfic. (I’ve been skating along without betas thus far because I, um, am not quite sure how to ask people to beta for me. But this seriously needs some more eyes on it than just mine.) Start posting the crackfic.
Clean up and post the two one-shots waiting in the queue. Do Yuletide again (because much fun was had with it). Maybe find a Buffyverse ficathon or two to participate in. Put down a few more roots in the fandom – ie, socialize a bit more.
