BSG: "Hero" and "Unfinished Business"

This... was a weird, random episode with implied backstory that felt totally contrived and wedged into our previous knowledge. Also it made no sense. The Cylons capture Bulldog, hang onto him for three years, intentionally let him go, and... what? How could they have known the exact reasons for his capture? Even if they did know, were they really counting on him killing Adama in vengeance? 'Cuz I have to say, it's not like they haven't had plenty of better opportunities to off him, if that is indeed what they want.
Then there's Tigh's big rousing speech, which came way out of left field and didn't seem to follow from... anything. Just Tigh in general felt very inconsistent during the course of the ep.
About the only interesting thing this entire episode was the very brief glimpse on the Cylon base star, where it seems Three has been having visions. Hmm.
Unfinished Business
I'd been warned. And yanno, I was pretty sure this was "the soap opera" ep just by the "previously on" flashbacks.
Speaking of, this show should just not do flashbacks. I can't think of a single instance where they did anything but bog down the story.
I'm inclined to feel sorry for Lee when Kara runs off and gets married, but then there's Dee. I'd want to feel sorry for Dee, except she totally threw over Billy (for Lee, ohmygoodness, she's got abysmal taste on top of her other flaws), so no sympathy there either. Sam. I'll feel sorry for Sam, shall I? He's a straight shooter who's done nothing to deserve any of this mess.
You know, once in a while I'll see an ep of something or read a novel in a series and say, "That felt like fanfiction." Which is to say, self-indulgent, telling the stories in the margins without connecting them to anything else in a meaningful way, playful but not productive. Epitaph Two from Dollhouse, that one LOST episode in (I think?) S3, and this. Sure, it was fabulous to see all these folks, usually so under the gun, letting their hair down a bit. I loved seeing the joy on all those faces. But that's not story.
