Goong Explains It All

Am still watching Goong. Would like to report that Crown Prince Shin is still a colossal jerk. You gotta feel sorry for the dude, because he has basically zero control over his life and had to give up his high school sweetheart to marry a complete stranger, but still: colossal jerk.

Meanwhile, new Crown Princess Chae-Kyung (Yoon Eun Hye) continues to be adorable as she tries very hard at being princess and puts up with Shin and his snobby friends, and whenever she cries, I cry. This is a thing with this actress, I think; I have never had anyone to made me tear up at the drop of the hat the way she can. She did it in Coffee Prince, too.

However, this post has a point! Which is that I was watching along and was suddenly struck by this conversation, about the public's opinion of their new crown princess. So much female character hate I've seen could be summed up thusly (with allowances for choppy translation):

FRIEND 1: Not so fast. The Anti-Chae-Kyung Club already has 50,000 members.

CHAE-KYUNG: Anti-Chae-Kyung? What the heck did I do wrong?

FRIEND 2: There are two ways you can get haters. Reason number one, you've said something utterly offensive and it brings in haters. Reason number two, just the fact that you're breathing brings in haters.

CHAE-KYUNG: What the heck? What about me? What the heck is my reason?

FRIENDS 2: You married a prince, when you're a shabby commoner.

(Unrelated note: I'm very curious to know how much the translation of the slang captures the spirit of the original Korean. When Chae-Kyung says 'heck' and 'freaking,' just how informal/uncouth is that in the Korean? At one point she says 'motherfreaking,' and she seems shy of using this language around adults, which makes me wonder if the Korean is pretty darned rude and it's getting cleaned up for the English translation.)
