Characters: Marc-Andre Fleury, Matt Murray, Jeff Zatkoff

Summary:

Flower is a good teammate who doesn't mind playing backup. He's trying, anyway.

I have in the past week said I couldn't write PWPs or poly for exchanges, and then I got this flash fic exchange assignment and proceeded to do both. In three days. For 4300 words.

It has the kind of flaws that a fic is going to have when you write it in three days, but also it engages with RL events and with how I see these people in ways that I don't manage to get at very often in this fandom, and I'm just really freaking pleased with it. It's my favorite thing I've posted so far this year.

Also it's got kinky worldbuilding not really indicated in the tags, if you're into that.

The Other Side of the Wall (1718 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins Ensemble
Additional Tags: Crossdressing, Revelations, Boston Bruins
Summary:

The problem is that a new dress always makes him a little giddy, secretly, in the bottom of his stomach. A new dress he loves this much overwhelms all his better judgment.

Fact about me: when I see a prompt on the kinkmeme involving a team captain, very often I want to fill it with Chara. It's sheer contrariness on my part.

So I wrote this one Sunday morning on a lark. The title and prompt are inspired by Captain Shakespeare from Stardust, if that's an incentive.

Fandom: Supernatural

Words / Rating: 1200 words / PG-13 for language
Era: futurefic, but with spoilers through S4, I guess
Content / Warnings: canon-level violence, general creepiness
Summary: Tamara hasn't seen Sam Winchester in twenty years. She's not sure she's happy to see him now.

A/N: For [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis. I did not even begin to do justice to your prompts, but I did enjoy getting to write Tamara again. I hope you find something in this fic to enjoy and that you have very happy holidays. <3

Title: Ride 'Em, Cowboy
Fandom:: Supernatural
Characters: Meg, Sam
Rating / Words: 650 words / R for blood and general nastiness
Contents / Warnings: violence, blood, death of children, possession, self-harm, noncon arousal, sexist slurs
Spoilers: through S2 Born Under a Bad Sign
Summary: This is no well-broke ride; this pony tries to take the bit every damn time, and it’s a tight rein Meg keeps.

A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver as part of a prompt subversion challenge for [livejournal.com profile] spnspiration. My prompt was any variation of Sam and Meg - "Love hurts, love scars, love wounds and mars,". However, I think this might be a subversion only in the sense that no one is going to understand how it relates to the prompt at all. :\ I swear I had this whole thing about Sam doing the thing he does here and how it related to love, but then the horse metaphor took over. :P Can we pretend I was subverting a prompt for pony play?

DARK. Mind the warnings! Can also be read at AO3.

[community profile] trickortreatex authors are revealed! I wrote five things, which I'm lumping here all in one post for convenience. I had a lot of fun playing in basically all my fandoms, especially since the Buffy characters I want to write usually aren't eligible for exchanges.

However, out of the bunch I definitely had a couple of favorites: the hockey fic (which at 4k feels absurdly long for a treat in a 300 word exchange, but oh well) and the steampunk Meg/Castiel. Because, you know, steampunk Meg/Castiel. Even if the fic doesn't really have a plot, as such.

When In Doubt, Set It On Fire - hockey RPF, Crosby/Ovechkin, 4000 words
First Sidney tells Alex Consol's ice is cursed. Then he says he has a plan to fix it. Then he stops talking to Alex very much at all, and that's when Alex starts to get worried. -- More monster-y than actual horror, it turned out. Oh well.

bright wings - SPN, Meg/Castiel, 1200 words
Castiel has metal wings. Meg has an oil can. -- AKA the steampunk fic. :DDD

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship - SPN, Meg + Bela friendship, 700 words
Meg goes to hell in search of loyal subjects. She thinks she may have found one. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess, with bonus Meg kvetching of Crowley's redecorating scheme. :D

Enough to Make a Girl Feel All Gooey - BtVS, Buffy/Faith, 500 words
Buffy told Faith to stay in Cleveland. Yeah, right. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni, theoretically an AU of the Wishverse. Yes, an AU of the AU. Hush.

wherever you go, there you are - MCU, Natasha + Bucky, 500 words
Natasha thought about the places she’d like to hide, given a choice. She ordered them by practicality, and she started at the bottom. -- My first MCU fic! Behold!

Title: worn for sleeping
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing/Characters: Jess, Sam
Words/Rating: 1300 words / PG rating
Spoilers: through 5.21
Summary: It takes three tubes of paint – three shades carelessly selected, though when she finishes Jess sees each one is progressively more red – to write Sam’s name on the wall.

A/N: And here is my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen fic, written for TammyRenH! One of her prompts involved Jess, and I knew immediately it was the one I had to write, but the most important conceit to this fic didn't occur to me until later.

I worried a little that it might be too shippy for Summergen, but no one complained, so I guess I was sufficiently low key about the ship. And the meta aspect wasn't planned at all and snuck in completely on its own.

I maaay write some author commentary on it. First I have to go answer the lovely comments, though. :D

So it turned out I wrote two stories for Beyond Panels.

Open Road, Captain America comics, Natasha+Bucky
A post-apocalyptic road trip amnesiafic? Because why not? I had much bigger aspirations for this fic, but this is what I ended up with. It's, shall we say, largely a mood experiment. Or something.

Safe House, Black Widow comics, Natasha+Ana
This is very much a slice-of-life, between-the-scenes kind of fic for the new Edmondson/Noto volume of Black Widow. That book is 90% of Natasha on the job in foreign locales and 10% of her at home in a large, bare apartment in Little Ukraine, NYC. This fic flips those percentages. I ended up being pretty happy with it in terms of capturing Natasha's perspective in the canon, and also because I got to write female friendship in it, which makes me happy.

I think by and large these two fics demonstrate that I'm just ever so much happier if I'm working within or pushing against the confines of some specific canon, especially when I first start writing a new canon. It's only later when I become more comfortable with my own interpretation that I can relax my attention to canon detail and start exploring with big AUs and things.

Title: Death (of Rats) Takes a Holiday
Fandom: Discworld
Characters: Quoth the Raven, Death of Rats, A'Tuin
Spoilers: Uses geographical info derived from The Colour of Magic / The Light Fantastic, but should read just fine for anyone familiar with the characters.
Summary: Quoth the Raven takes a holiday with the Death of Rats, sees new sights, and acquires a taste for elephant fleas. Also there's a cat.

My first Discworld fic! Gah, writing in new fandoms is always stressful, especially prose fandoms. I ended up liking this okay, though, even though I wrote it in one evening after I realized that I had misjudged the [livejournal.com profile] rarecharacters deadline by TWO WEEKS. (This is also my excuse for the title and the summary.) Half the plot sort of inspired by a fortuitous reread of Cordwainer Smith's story "A Game of Rat and Dragon."

Title: Where Owls Dwell
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Sam, Dean
Words / Rating: 2400 / PG-13
Warnings: horror, implied gore
Spoilers: through 8.14
Summary: Everyone dreams about flying, right?

A/N: here it is at last, my [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen story for [livejournal.com profile] amber1960. I angsted over this until the very last possible moment; I think I finished editing it like 20 minutes before the deadline. It is not really my usual fare, and I think I am still too close to it to tell whether I like it. Perhaps I'll come back next year and be impressed.

Also available at AO3 here.

We'll see if I manage to follow through and rec things all week, but for now, here are my favorites for the first few days (with the caveat that I read very little Sam/Dean and am unlikely to rec porn unless it's also got good character stuff I like).

Please note that all these are anonymous! Author reveals don't happen until later. Also, they're all under 2500 words.

It's Always Sunny in Area 51 - Dean+Cas, PG-13
Military/SF AU, in which Dean gets lost in the military complex known as Area 51 and runs into a nerdy scientist type with zero socials skills. Neat Dean+Sam dynamic, too, and the final image is great.

We Are Only Free Inside These Walls - Meg/Castiel, R
Every so often, Meg and Castiel play hookey from their respective duties and meet in the middle. A far future fic with some neat angel/demon ship aspects to it. Also, hairbrushing. I really like the interplay between them here.

Devil's Luck - Sam/Dean, PG-13
LADYHAWKE AU, YOU GUYS. From an OC demon's perspective in second person POV, which I realize will lose some people, but this is SO GREAT. It's dark but not too dark, the narrator voice is great, the slow unfolding of what's happening is great. For those concerned about the ship, it reads as basically gen expect for one line of implied Sam/Dean. It's great fun, y'all.

A Thin Veneer - J2, PG-13
FBI AU, in which Jared got stuck in white collar crimes years ago on account of freezing in action, and now is the one-man welcome wagon for the guy just coming out from deep undercover. This fic is mostly character, and very nicely done character work it is, too. The slow development of Jared's relationship with Jensen and the emotion of the finish really worked for me.

The Wall Between Us - ART, Dean+Cas, NSFW (gore)
Dean may or may not have acquired a pet komodo dragon in purgatory. One way or the other, the giant lizard in the picture no doubt explains why Dean is holding a corpse by its hair. Great composition, very dramatic lighting, this fic invites all sorts of stories to explain it.

When You Put It Like That - ART, Victor+Bela, SFW
Noir AU! W00t! Is he the world-weary cop doing what he can in a city full of scum? Is she the sticky-fingered moll who sometimes gifts him with information sometimes? They snark a lot, but neither of them ever mention that one incident when they got drunk together after a gunfight...

Title: Red-Headed Stepchild
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Lilith, Abaddon
Words / Rating: 1100 words / G
Spoilers: through 8.12
Warnings: blatant misuse of historical religious tradition (so, like the show, basically)
Summary: Being the story of how Abaddon became the last surviving Night of Hell.

Available on AO3 here.

A/N: Look, I can still write fic! Genfic, even! This was 100% prompted by the belief that Night of Hell is a much, much cooler title than Knight of Hell. Sometimes, spelling is everything.

I stole a number of names here from Binsfield's Classification of Demons and used them for my own purposes.

There are seven nights in hell, and worse than nights.  )

snick_backup: (Yuletide)
Polysemy (3071 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Railsea - China Mieville, MIEVILLE China - Works
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Abacat Naphi/OFC
Characters: Abacat Naphi
Summary:

She stands on deck, weight shifting as natural as breathing with each nickitut nickitut of wheels on rails, & she shields her eyes with her hand – her natural one, made of meat not metal – & you ask, out of what stock does one begin to whittle Abacat Naphi?

---

Finally, after years of wanting to write Miveille fic, this year I did: a treatfic about Captain Naphi from Mieville's newest, Railsea. Naphi is the (female) Captain Ahab figure in a novel that in the end does not look very much like Moby Dick. She's rather an enigma, in terms of motivation, and she is fabulous.

I ended up working in my fascination for the novel's concept of a "philosophy": a driving force, a motivating principle embodied by some particular, huge animal that one is trying to kill. In Naphi's case, it's the gargantuan pale mole Mocker-Jack, Mole of Many Meanings. This is not, it seems to me, so very much unlike the Church of God Kraken's worship in Kraken (another Mieville novel which I otherwise mostly disliked). It's got that same idea of attaching personal metaphysical significance to elements of nature.

The fic's also notable for being my first honest-to-goodness femslash, of Naphi/OFC, although the basic thrust of the fic is more character study than romance. (I notice that I tend to be very lady-centric for Yuletide; all of them have at least one significant woman, even if I had to invent her myself - I also tend to invent OCs for Yuletide - and most have no male characters at all.)

snick_backup: (Downton Abbey)
Title: Nativity
Fandom: Downton Abbey
Characters / Pairings: Thomas, Sybil, background Sybil/Branson
Words / Rating: 1700 words / PG
Spoilers: Through the Christmas special. The fic is inspired by certain S3 events, but it cheerfully disregards all S3 canon.
Warnings: shameless fix-it fic; zero research of the contemporary Irish political/economic climate, which I've bent to my own purposes
Summary: Thomas follows Sybil and Branson to Ireland to try his entrepreneurial hand again and perhaps stir up a little political trouble while he's at it. Which is how he comes to be on the run with pregnant Sybil Branson and the only person on hand when she goes into labor. Lucky him.

A/N: I'll say this for a certain episode of S3: it stirred up all these Sybil/Thomas friendship feelings I didn't even know I had. This is the result. I'm fairly sure I have Downton Abbey fic ideas that don't involve babies, but none of those seem to get written. Oh, well.

It’s a shut-up flat they find themselves in, only two streets over from the Bransons’ own. )

Title: It Perches in the Soul
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Castiel, Jo
Words/Rating: 3300 words / PG
Contents/Warnings: wingfic, rampant nonlinearity
Spoilers: through 5.18
Summary: Jo first met Castiel long before Carthage, and he kept seeing her long after it.

A/N: 'Tis my birthday. Since I am horrible at remembering to write fic for other people's birthdays, it has become tradition that instead I post fic on my birthday as a gift to you all, to thank you for another year of being excellent. Because you are. <3

I was going to say something at this point about how my birthdayfics have a history of being hopelessly self-indulgent, but honestly, if I were really being hopelessly self-indulgent, this would be schmoop about alpha!Gen and Jared her pregnant omega: RPF, mpreg, and a/b/o, a trifecta of Do Not Want for many of you. Which I tried to avoid. You're welcome. :)

However, it occurs to me that my birthdayfics also have a history of experimental story structure, which this has in spades. So hey, it's traditional after all.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] snickfic
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] ladyofthelog / [personal profile] verity
Fandom: Supernatural RPF
Characters/Pairings: Jared-Jensen friendship, some Jared/Matt Cohen, Jared/OFC, but the story is basically non-shippy
Genre: high school alpha/beta/omega AU, coming-of-age story
Word Count: 23,000
Rating: R
Contents / Warnings: alpha/beta/omega dynamics, references to knotting and mpreg, masturbation, sex talk ranging from clinical to juvenile, crude and insensitive language, sexual harassment, bullying, extended discussion of intersex genitalia
Note: Takes place in the same universe as (but does not depend on) my other SPN RPF knottingverse fics.

Summary: When Jared goes into heat for the first time, his comfortable high school slacker existence comes to an abrupt halt.
