FIC: How to Make Friends

I wasn't expecting to post anything this month, but then surprise! Fic happened after the Pens-Bruins game last night. And it has already been read by more than two people, which is about the audience I expected for a pairing this random.

How to Make Friends (1619 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tuukka Rask/Bryan Rust
Characters: Tuukka Rask, Bryan Rust
Additional Tags: Situational Dubcon, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anal Sex, Rivalry, Post-Game(s)
Summary:

“You’ve got a lot of nerve, asking for me,” Rask said.

Bryan tried to close the door with some swagger. What he had was not so much nerve as nerves. “Game winner gets to pick anyone, that’s the rule.”

In no kind of order.

* Donald Trump is Gaslighting America - while the rest of the media wibbles, Teen Vogue is ON IT

* Trump, Mocking Claim That Russia Hacked Election, at Odds with G.O.P. - (NYT) Some Republican leaders are concerned about this Russia thing, which gives me some hope for humanity. Here's a statement from bipartisan Senate leadership on the issue.

* Related calls to action regarding election interference: calling your reps to request the review in time for electors to vote, a script for same.

* Doxxing May Become A Federal Crime - (Buzzfeed) Bill introduced by Rep. Katherine Clark of MA, same legislator who introduced the No Religious Registry Act.

* A Wisconsin court case may be the last best hope to fix gerrymandering by 2020 (Vox) - fascinating, possibly hopeful read

* A thread on the Moral Mondays activism in NC that eventually resulted in incumbent Republican governor being defeated in last election. (I really need to know more about this; I have a hold in on a library book about it.)

* Facebook added an option to report fake news

Wednesday linkdump

Most of this is not activism-related; some of it is not even politics-related. But I'm reading a lot more widely than I used to, and I thought other folks might also be interested in some of my finds?

Election-related
* Graham preparing 'Dreamers' bill - bipartisan bill to protect DACA participants

* An unaired interview on Trump, authoritarianism and kleptocracy (Sarah Kendzior). I really liked this - more hopeful than the title sounds, to me.

* Nonprofit journalists are gearing up with a flood of donations (NYT)

* Fuck Everything and Blame Everyone (Deadspin?). This was a cathartic read.

Around the world
* How an Indian Innovator Reverse-Engineered the Making of Sanitary Pads (NYT Mag) - A guy figures out the cheapest possible way to make pads, reproduces the manufacturing equipment, and starts setting up little shops all over India run by local women. There are still good things happening in the world, you guys.

* The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare (NYT). AKA why you should throw out your non-stick pans, but also a decades-long story of criminally awful pollution and one guy who did something about it.

* Bloomberg's "Jealousy List", aka stuff so good they wish they'd published it. aka where I found a lot of these other links!

* Keepin' It 1600 - podcast with four former Obama aids. I got hooked on this shortly before the election even though I basically never listen to podcasts.

* [tumblr.com profile] leupagus has started something called political homework that seems like a great way way to motivate oneself to learn the ropes of their local politics.

* 10 Questions for Fake News Detection, a handy chart from The News Literacy Project

* This morning I called my senator to thank her for her vocal opposition to several Trump cabinet picks. The staffer sounded very pleasantly surprised that I wasn't calling to complain. Which is to say, if your elected officials are doing something good, let them know! Positive reinforcement!

* Speaking of that, a call to support Kellogg pulling their ads from Breitbart would not go amiss.

* Trump syllabus - extensive reading list for context on Trump-related issues (via [syndicated profile] stop_trump_feed)

* "It's unprecedented in our history": Trump's election inspired millions in nonprofit donations - sometimes just seeing numbers is really validating

* All Resistance is Local: A Plan of Progressive Action for the Trump Years - this has fascinating ideas that I would like to explore more. I wish there were a reading list attached.

* Finally, another rec for #ACALLADAY, which continues to be a fantastic mix of news, calls to action, and recommended reading.

politics/activism Saturday roundup

* FightTrump.co is a site that posts daily, weekly, and monthly calls to action. You can have them emailed to you, see them via Facebook, or follow the DW feed [syndicated profile] stop_trump_feed. So far they cover a wide range of things - today's is basically "Educate yourself on Trump's agenda by reading some of these linked articles," which is an A+ choice of your activism energy. It's not good to have zeal without knowledge, etc.

* Speaking of educating oneself, here is a massive NYT article on Trump's conflicts of interest.

* Call your legislators about the National Popular Vote Compact (also consider following Yglesias, he's a Vox writer and a good source of info and sense)

Not so much activism today as just stuff I found interesting.

* THIS POEM. If you click on nothing else in this post, click on this.

* Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington state has introduced a bill that would ban registration based on religion - religions such, say, Islam. Consponsors include folks like Ellison and Wasserman Schultz. Something to mention to your congressperson('s staff) the next time you call them.

* Sen. Orrin Hatch, most senior Republican senator, is absolutely opposed to getting rid of the filibuster. So that seems good.

* Statistical look on which senators might cross the aisle and vote against their party fellows.

Sunday activism linkdump

* If you're having trouble getting through the House Oversight Committee on the phone, you can also fax them.

* Re: the ongoing discussion of Trump's conflicts of interest, Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) has introduced legislation that would remove the current exemption of the president and VP from conflict of interest laws. Info at the link for how to support this legislation. (Yet another tip from [community profile] thisfinecrew, which has been FANTASTIC so far. Follow if you haven't yet and are at all interested in US political activism.)

* [tumblr.com profile] leupagus is a fandom person who is ON TOP OF IT in terms of ways we can engage with our elected officials. Their Twitter is also a quality follow.

* [tumblr.com profile] reckoningofjoy is a blog "intended as a record and remembrance of our progressive, civil- and human-rights victories, even in the course of the difficult and bleak times that the next few years are likely going to be for our country.

"Not because any of them will be enough, will mean we’re done, or that everything’s fine now. But because it’s going to be vital to remember, especially now, what we’re capable of, that good things still happen, and how they happen."

Saturday activism links dump

A short one today.

* People are calling the Department of Justice to ask them to Audit the Vote. There's also a Change.org petition

* #ACallADay (keeps fascism away) is a great newsletter full of activism suggestions. I appreciate that it includes a lot of informational links about issues, in addition to the calls to action.

Friday activism linkdump

* New activism comms [community profile] thisfinecrew and [community profile] spoonlessactivists.

* Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) is asking for people's Obamacare stories. If you've got a positive one, now would be a great time to share. EDIT: Paul Ryan ALSO wants to hear if you support the ACA - give him a call.

* If you called the House Committee on Oversight and Reform about Trump's conflicts of interest, good work, you helped jam their phone lines (although the article seems to think the call was put out in response to Trump's meeting with Japanese leaders today, when that FB post is from Wednesday).

* I learned today that the Million Woman March the day after the inauguration will also have local protests in other states, if you can't get to DC that day (as I cannot). More info here.

* So DW DOES have the functionality to allow you to filter out specific tags by other users (for example, my "topic: politics" tag) if you have a paid account. It's just not easy to find. )

another concrete step to take

I called my two senators and my house rep yesterday about Steve Bannon, and to my house rep's staffer I also mentioned the possible inquiry into Donald Trump's conflicts of interest, which I mentioned the other day. But! It turns out you can also call the House Oversight Committee on this same topic, full info here (or here, if that post should suddenly disappear). They are a) ACTIVELY TALLYING CALLS about this issue, and b) closed next week for the holidays and making a decision immediately following. So tomorrow is all the time we have. I got a "mailbox is full" message when I called after hours tonight, but I'm going to try again tomorrow.

(BTW, if you don't want to see my politics posts, LJ lets you filter out specific tags of someone you follow. I could have sworn DW had this functionality, too, but maybe that was my imagination?)

more resources

"We're His Problem Now" Calling Sheet - easy reference for finding your elected Congresspeople, plus scripts for talking to them, plus a specific call to action each week. I'm going to use this a lot, I think.

Another google doc, still in progress, of general FAQs for ways to help out, ways to protect yourself, etc, as well as an international list of orgs fighting against fascism.

BTW, did you know you can get a free WaPo subscription if you have an email ending in .gov/.edu/.mil?

politics stuff

Kind of a linkdump? I've been reading a ton on ffa, although sometimes I have to step away because the predictions are just too dire for me to handle. But I've also gotten a ton of great info from there, as well as from my flist.

Explainers for Breitbart, Bannon, and Milo

Top House Oversight Democrat asks for hearings on Trump’s conflicts of interest - maybe something to talk to your congressperson about?

A letter circulating in the House "requesting Trump rescind his appointment of Steve Bannon. So far at 120 co-signers." Something else to mention to your congressperson, maybe.

Speaking of, here is how to find your congressperson based on your zip, although I had to then google mine to get a phone number. And if you can call them on the phone, you should.

If you want to volunteer time/money, here is a site that helps you get started finding places, with a bunch of very satisfying swearing.

And if you need help getting/staying motivated, here is a message from President Obama to grassroots organizers and all of us.

FIC: silk ribbons

For Trick or Treat my recip gave me a bunch of great characters to work with and carte blanche in terms of femslash ships, and so I wrote this Dru/Faith fic that involves dreams and a corset and other old-fashioned underwear.

silk ribbons (986 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Drusilla/Faith Lehane
Characters: Drusilla (BtVS), Faith Lehane
Additional Tags: Dreams, Undressing, Seduction
Summary:

She pouts, lips pursed, and Faith doesn’t go in for weird chicks but she’d kiss those lips. She’d lean in right now if this freaking corset weren’t holding her so stiff.

comics ponderings

Have definitely fallen headfirst into comics again. This was not planned. I'm working through a bunch of trades currently. Black Magic is looking good, very female-centric urban fantasy cop book, but the first trade barely gets it started, so I need Rucka and Scott to bring it back from hiatus. Monstress (Liu/Takeda) is dense but worth it, once you get into it; I'm looking forward to the next trade. Harrow County (Bunn/Crook) is freaking gorgeous so far, this wonderful watercolor stuff and a spooky story of just the kind I like.

I'm not reading Marvel, because I'm just so irritated by the perpetual and disruptive crossover events, the endless reboots, and the constant juggling of creative teams. So it's all Image and other smaller publishers for me. It's too bad, because Marvel is putting out a ton of female-centric books these days but ugh. No. I might break my rule for Gamora, though, but in general it's all Image and Dark Horse and indies for me.

I keep having this problem, though, where I feel like I don't know how to be fannish about comics. Most comics have no fic fandom whatsoever, and in order to write I need both readers and, ideally, some predecessors whose fic I can read, so that's a no-go. Likewise, it's often hard to even find anyone to talk with about what I read. I have zero graphics skills, so that's not really an outlet (and that would really work better if I bought digital, which I don't).

It kind of feels like the way to be fannish about comics is to read more comics, but a) $$, b) I don't want to just be consuming media all the time. IDK. I don't know how to funnel my comics enthusiasm into something that feels creative or productive. It's a struggle. I've started dabbling in drawing again, so at least there's that? (NB: I am Not an Artist.)

I'm also having some angst, again, about how to buy comics. I don't have a tablet, so digital is a pain. Floppies just irritate me; I hate storing them and I dislike rereading them. I really just want trades, but they always say if you want to support your favorite series, you buy floppies. But I don't wanna. Also I just respond better to comics if I get a bunch of story at once, ie in a trade. So I think I've decided to just spread my comics $ out among more trades. That supports my beloved LCS, at least.

And if I DO start buying floppies of something, it's a rule that I have to buy a whole arc of five issues or whatever. I have the first three issues of so many books which I then finished in digital or failed to finish at all.
