* I made a comics Tumblr. There's nothing really on it yet. But relatedly, I've started reading comics again, so maybe there will be new content soon.

* I looked through my fic spreadsheet and discovered approximately half the things I've written in the past three years have been for exchanges, and NO FREAKING WONDER I'm feeling a little burned out on exchanges. I keep saying I'm going to do them less, and I keep failing to do fewer of them. But maybe next year. I've turned in my last outstanding assignment (for Trick or Treat!), so that's something, and there's nothing else I'm going to be even tempted to sign up for for several months.

* Feeling more fic-fannish than sports-fannish with hockey right now. I think I'm still recovering from the playoffs. I'm with Sid - I didn't realize how hard it would be to win the Cup. /o\ But meanwhile there's so much fic I want to exist, so I'm working on that.

* I've started using the "Choose random icon" function here, because I have so many great icons I don't use anymore. So here, have some darling Genevieve.

I didn't realize it'd been so long since I caught up with this! First, I don't remember if I've mentioned it here, but I've started a monthly Pens prompt comm that runs through Tumblr and AO3, called Pens Monthly (my skill at naming stuff, let me show you it). And I have accidentally written almost 12k for it just in the past two months, oops. But also yay?

First, mer!Geno/Flower where they commiserate on their respective non-productivity during the playoffs:
Buddy Breathing (4948 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Marc-Andre Fleury/Evgeni Malkin
Characters: Marc-Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin
Additional Tags: Merpeople, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, 2015-2016 NHL Season, Old Friends, Pittsburgh Penguins
Summary:

There was no point in telling Flower last night hadn’t been his fault. Zhenya knew what that conviction felt like, how hard it was to shake. Sid had coaxed Zhenya out of that mood once or twice, but earnestness came easy to Sid. Somehow he found the kinds of words that always eluded Zhenya.

Zhenya couldn’t be Sid. He knew better than to try. Abruptly he said, “You want to swim?”

(A mer!Geno fic)

And then Conor Sheary/Brian Dumoulin, aka the fic where I finally write the tiny!alpha/large!omega heat sex fic of my dreams, since I never managed to write that for Jared/Gen. Dubious bonus: I fell head over heels for Brian Dumoulin while writing this, and am devastated to find that there is almost no fic about him.
one giant eggplant emoji (6658 words) by Snickfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF

Relationships: Brian Dumoulin/Conor Sheary
Characters: Brian Dumoulin, Conor Sheary
Additional Tags: Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Vaginal Fisting, Knotting, Insecurity, Size Difference, Sappy, Pittsburgh Penguins
Summary:

He was so tall. Conor mostly forgot that, somehow. Dumo was the first of the Wilkes-Barre guys to make it to the show, but he was still one of them, an equal - until now, as Conor surveyed the terrain and felt pretty damned unequal.

Dumo met Conor’s eyes. His cheeks were apple-red. “Please?” Dumo said, as though even now Conor might leave him hanging.

Finally, the Beauty and the Beast horror fic I wrote for Darkest Night (no gore, just creepyness):
Oh, I Couldn't Put It Down (1387 words) by Snickfic

Fandom: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Belle (Disney), Beast (Disney)

Summary:

Posted ON Wednesday, will wonders never cease.

Read
Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. This was an ARC that someone thrust into my hands at a con last year, although it's now long since published. It's the story of how we find a giant robot hand buried in the earth, which leads to finding more giant robot parts, which leads to the question of what exactly humans dare do with a giant robot. This was low on science and speculation and high on... IDK, human interest? Which makes it sound like a Robert Charles Wilson novel, except it wasn't that good. It was told almost entirely as a series of interviews by a secretive, powerful gentleman with unclear official status, so that was fun, but by mid-book I was really hoping that we'd find out more about him and his ambiguous morality and status - he's such a central figure that I hoped the book would turn his sort-of neutrality on its head. In that, I was disappointed.

Reading
House of Leaves, by whatsisname. This book has crystallized for me for the first time that although I love weird creepy houses (in fact weird creepy architecture of all kinds), I just don't get them often because I'm completely disinterested in ghosts. Anyway, the textbook manuscript portion is fascinating and I already love it; the framing story with this idiot barhopper and his idiot bro friend is driving me crazy. (NO SPOILERS PLEASE.)

The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. Reread. Because it's that time of year.

A reminder that the hockey RPF comm on Imzy is still going, although it's quieted down somewhat after the initial burst of enthusiasm. But there's still at least one post to the comm most days, ready for discussion, and I still have invites for thems that want 'em.

TRICK OR TREAT. [community profile] trickortreatex is pretty much my favorite exchange these days - I've done it all three years. You can request/offer both fic and art if you want, and the minimum for fic is only 300 words. SUPER LOW STRESS. I usually try to write a bunch of treats, too, because like, 300 words is nothing. I can do that, right? And the tag set seems particularly delicious this year. COME PLAY. Come ask for hockey so I can treat you.

books read

The Lie Tree, by Frances Hardinge. A girl and her family go to live on a desolate island off of England, and the girl determines to salvage her father's unfairly tainted scientific reputation. This didn't hit my iddy spots quite as hard or delight me quite as much as Cuckoo Song, but it was still very good. I love how complicated Hardinge's relationships are and how no one is ever as good or as bad as they seem - which is very much one of the themes in this book.

The Cloud Roads, by Martha Wells. In a land of many and varied humanoid species, a winged loner stumbles across the first one of his kind that he's met since he was a child and gets embroiled in winged politics. Someone told me this author wrote fic before she went pro and I was like "YUP, MAKES SENSE," because she knows to punch the id buttons like a fic writer. But also politics! Fighting! Romance (that made me cry on an airplane)! This is the first of a series, and I look forward to reading more.

The Winter People, by Jennifer McMahon. A story about several women a century apart and their experiences in a possibly-haunted old farmhouse in Vermont. I loved so much about this - the varied female cast, the setting, the careful peeling back of layers as we discover what happened. I wanted something spooky with a legit supernatural element, and this totally delivers.

HOWEVER. spoilers )

Dreamships, by Melissa Scott. 90s SF about AI and spaceships and stuff. I got recced this one for canon gay, but honestly I got 50 pages in and gave up because I found it such a slog. Too much tell instead of show in the narrative, and so much very dull worldbuilding exposition. It was like it was trying to be cyberpunk but didn't have the chops.

(Yes, I know, this is ridiculously early. I'M EXCITED, OKAY. Done with tweaking as of 9/19.)

YAY, I’ve done this exchange for the last couple of years and am super excited to do it again. I hope you are also excited! I tried to include both fluffy/sexy prompts and horror prompts for each character/fandom I requested. However, they’re just ideas, so if you have something else you’d like to write or draw related to my requested characters, feel free! I've also included lists of stuff I like in general, to help inspire you.

I have fewer horror prompts than sexy/fluffy prompts, but that's just because I had a harder time thinking of prompts. Please be assured I would be delighted by horror fic or art! Below I’ve included some general types of horror I like, though, so maybe that will help inspire you.

Over a year ago, I saw a kinkmeme prompt that boiled down to "What if Phil Kessel got outed just after he was traded to the Pens?" I started a fill almost immediately, and have been adding to it off and on ever since, and also going back and revising as real life kept catching up to the events of the fic. (Jossed by reality! *shakes fist*) Finally, in a totally unexpected burst of creativity, I wrote the final third of it in the last week and a half. And here it is.

I'd like to write up some commentary for some of it - at the very least a list of sources for all the random details and references I included. But that's not going to happen right this minute, so in the meantime, have a fic.

Books!

60 Essential SF reads, aka A Bunch of Books by Women, a Genderqueer (?) Person, and John Scalzi. I have no idea what John Scalzi did to place himself in such exalted company, although having read Old Man's War, I can't say it seems to have been his writing, really.

I have read 20 of the authors represented and 17 of the specific books suggested, which mostly tells me the people who wrote the list did a decent job of choosing which of an author's books people were most likely to have read, as opposed to all those lists that have something other than Pern as McCaffrey's representative book.

the list )

A few of those people/books are on my immediate to read list - I have The Cloud Roads on hold at the library as we speak - and some I've never heard of. A few authors I didn't bold because I'd only read short stories, not novels.

Overall, this list MUCH better represents my reading interests than your average "X Import Books" list, as I usually never get as high as 30% on them. Of those I've read, Tam Lin and Sunshine are all-time favorites, and The Raven Boys, The Dispossessed, and A Wrinkle in Time are all very good. (I think. I actually don't know if A Wrinkle in Time is good. L'Engle is so unique that I have trouble comparing her in any useful fashion with anyone else.)

Meme nabbed from [personal profile] makioka in a post she made approximately five million years ago.
You know that meme that goes around sometimes where you post your five favorite kinks and then five favorite couples, and it's like a wish into the universe to see if anybody will write it for you? Let's make it a little more interactive.

Comment here if you want to play, and I will give you 3-6 couples or characters that I associate with you, and you make an entry in your journal talking about those couples/characters and fics that you wish the universe would write for you.

Dear Creator of the dark-theme fanwork of my dreams, I am sooooo excited about this exchange, I can't even tell you. It's ridiculous. Until I started digging into the tagset, I hadn't realized how much I've been pining for stuff that's darker, angstier, more screwed up. When fics and artwork go live, it'll be like Halloween has come early! \o/

I apologize in advance for how long this letter is. I just got really excited. Also, I ended up needing to say more about some canons than others, but I promise you, I would be equally excited about a gift related to any of them!

Every so often I just have a day where I HAVE to write something. Today was one of those days. The result is... 2600 words of murdery Gamora/Nebula time loops? That is not what I planned to write for my first non-drabble fic in this fandom, but here are.

Conveniently, this also fills my overlapping Reunion/Punishment squares for trope bingo and kink bingo respectively. W00t!

Most of these have been sitting in my bookmarks for a while, waiting for a recs theme that fit. Well, here's one: these are fics that get my VERY VERY HIGHEST recommendation. These are flat-out some of the best fics I have ever read. Or at least some of the ones I liked the most.

With No Lodestar in Sight by [archiveofourown.org profile] lindentree - True Grit, Mattie/LeBeouf, 82k.
Eighty-two thousand glorious words of plotty post-canon adventures and slow-burn romance. I cannot even tell you how much I love this fic. The author captures Mattie's voice and scalpel-like pragmaticism perfectly, and Rooster Cogburn is in it, and also did I mentioned adventures? And plot? This is everything I could have dreamed of in a post-canon shipfic, and it is so, so satisfying.

Counterfeit and Counterpart by [archiveofourown.org profile] Frea_O - MCU, Maria+Natasha friendship, 28k.
It's very rare that fic depicts friendship with as much care and nuance and with as many emotional complications as romance gets, but this fic does. This is a prickly friendship, sometimes two steps forward and one step back. And don't let the summary fool you - this is not a series of unrelated vignettes, but a story with a purpose. Maria is cranky and great, and there's a road trip at the end that's just marvelous. This whole fic is marvelous

A Beginner's Guide to Communing with the Dead by [archiveofourown.org profile] suspiciousflashlight - SPN, Dean/Castiel, 77k
This is an urban fantasy AU where Dean is a work-worn cop haunted, literally and figuratively, by the murder of one Jo Harvelle, and who accidentally summons an angel to his attic. And then keeps him there. And convinces him to help Dean solve the murder. It's the worldbuilding and the plot I love this fic for - it is possibly one of the most tightly-plotted fics I have ever read, with definitely one of the best climactic scenes I have ever seen in a fic. Or possibly in fiction.

Bruins were one of the featured teams in this month's Flash Fic Exchange, and so I wrote this for Las, combining her prompts of wingfic and "the great outdoors." For some reason, the outdoors I was feeling just now was the desert.
